A new beginning,
By
This review is from: Lovedrive (Audio CD)
Lovedrive (1979.) Scorpions' sixth album. The first album to feature Matthias Jabs on lead guitar.Following the release of their 1978 Taken By Force album, the Scorpions lost a valuable member of their band - the guitar virtuoso known as Ulrich Jon Roth. And thus began a transitional period for the heavy metal greats. During the sessions of their next studio album, they would hire new guitarist Matthias Jabs, fire him, replace him with original lead guitarist Michael Schenker, only to have him depart and end up rehiring Jabs. With their transitional period, did they create an excellent album of new stylings, or one of the blunders of their career? Read on for my review of Lovedrive. So many changes for one band in just one year, and yet they manage to whip out another excellent album! What are the odds of that? The band kicks things off with one of their very first big hits, Loving You Sunday Morning. This is straight-up classic metal with a slight melodic touch, making for one of their finest tracks ever recorded. And, of course, as with any Scorpions album (or any album by any band, for that matter), the non-hits are equally excellent. Track number two, Another Piece Of Meat, is Led Zeppelin-esque hard rock at its finest. Most of the tracks featured on the album are fast and furious hard power rockers that are sure to please any fan of the genre. One of the finest tracks of this styling is the title track. The band also tries their hand at ballads, one of which is the final track on the album, Holiday. This ballad is an underrated one, far superior to anything they would record in the next decade. All in all, this is one of the band's finest records. There are two versions of this album, but they differ only in their cover art. One version features the original cover art, which got the band into some trouble due to its explicit nature. The other version features the edited cover art, which is just a black background with the band's logo and a scorpion. Of course, they differ in art only, so it doesn't really matter which one you buy - unless you're some kind of completist. Lovedrive is a masterpiece of an album. You'll hear many of the band's fans praise this album - and why not? IT RULES! If you're a fan of the band, or you just like good classic power metal, don't hesitate to add this one to your collection.

Scorpions began to drive on a different musical road,
By
This review is from: Love Drive (Audio CD)
"Lovedrive" from 1979 was sort of a musical redirection for Scorpions. New lead guitar player Mathias Jabs took over after Uli Roth and the band started its journey towards a more mainstream approach, even it's not that clear at first sight. The songs are rather good but there's something disturbing that I just can't put my finger on - could it be the production/sound? Songs like "Another piece of meat" and "Lovedrive" are really good but something is missing and I just don't know what it is! With this album, Scorpions recorded the ballads "Always somewhere" and "Holiday" and it's obvious that the guys felt they really found their own way of writing ballads. Compare these tracks with upcoming songs like "When the smoke is going down" and "Still loving you" and you'll see that they are all written in the same fashion. The highlight on this album is the reggae inspired "Is there anybody there?" which shows a different and interesting side of Scorpions. Michael Schenker (ex UFO), who is Rudolf's brother and was a member of the original line up, is doing a guest appearance and playing solo on three songs. If you're a bit picky, be sure to get a copy with this original cover instead of the boring alternative one that has been released (to avoid upsetting people?). It says that this one is remastered but I can't hear any obvious proof that the sound have been improved. And while I'm at it, do not pay too much attention to the lyrics that sometimes are what you would call not of highest quality. But remember - these guys are from Germany.

The Teutonic champions return after Roth departs.,

...Awesome album. Pure raunch, pure heat. One of Scorpions' best. Its surprisingly good for the first one missing Uli Jon Roth. I have a place in my heart for the man but I still love this album. His Teutonic metal twin Michael Schenker is on here anyway. A three guitar attack with Mathias, Rudi and Michael. Highly worth it but I wonder what could've been if they let Michael in on the songwriting more and gave him more solos. "Another Piece of Meat" an awesome (ironic title if you read the lyrics) blazing tune. "Coast to Coast" UFO style crunchy instrumental. Lovedrive- practically a Scorpions rewrite of "Lights Out" by UFO. Intense singing from Klaus Meine. Get it now, its one of their best post Roth.
