When Sam Roberts released his heavily-acclaimed full-length debut We Were Born In A Flame in 2003, the Montreal rocker received high praise from fans and journalists alike; his second CD Chemical City, however, was considerably more psychedelic and garnered less adoration from the masses. Five years after his debut, this third disc Love At The End Of The World appears to have achieved a solid balance between radio-friendly rock and rootsy jams, and is more than capable of pleasing both palates. For the most part, ‘Born’s commentary is divided into two topics: love and politics. Lyrically, Roberts is subtle and sharp throughout; his first single “Them Kids” is done in a sing/talk style that evokes the spirit of Dylan’s “Subterranean Homesick Blues” and reflects on music’s past and future; overtop of an up-tempo melody, Roberts’ emotes “the kids don’t know how to dance to rock and roll.” “The Pilgrim” is another standout, including a musical invocation to world leaders that asserts “I hope it’s clear as crystal/That the man with the pistol/Is calling all the shots these days.” There are trademark Roberts instrumental rock-outs throughout as well; noteworthy points in that regard include the folksy “Words & Fire” -- featuring fellow Montreal singer Angela Desveaux -- which has the languidness and warmth of a backstage-at-Woodstock jam, and disc closer “Detroit ’67,” a track that resonates with bluesy piano and old school rock ‘n roll sing-song style. --Denise Sheppard

5.0 out of 5 stars Easily my new favourite Sam Roberts album, May 7 2009

After having this disc in my rotation for a little while now, it has become, hands down, my favourite of the three Sam Roberts albums out there. I loved "We Were Born In A Flame", I enjoyed but wasn't as crazy about "Chemical City", but this one really blows me away.

It's full of catchy songs, all with the distinctive sounds of the Sam Roberts Band. Some of them get my toes tapping (Love At The End of the World, for one), others stick in my head for hours after I hear them and strike me with their lyrics (Lions of the Kalahari! Best song!), and I could go on and on. This album has everything from rock to melody to great lyrics and good energy. I love how this band harmonizes when they sing together.

Great purchase. You won't regret having this one.

5.0 out of 5 stars Another Stellar Album, Jun 4 2008

I've been looking forward to this album all year. After first listen I didn't quite know what to think of it. I found that it took a couple of listens before the album really grew on me...and now it's on regular rotation. While it's not as good as `We Were Born In A Flame' (that one is a masterpiece) I think it's a better album than `Chemical City'. Sam Roberts is a brilliant songwriter and his compelling lyrics, catchy hooks and melodies are as strong as ever. If you like his previous albums this one will not disappoint.

Standout tracks include: Fixed To Ruin, Them Kids, Up Sister, End of The Empire and Waking the Dead.
