Book Description

July 1 2008
A guidebook for all who are called to the path of conscious love. This powerful book, written by an Episcopal priest, tells of her intense relationship with Brother Raphael Robin, a seventy-year-old Trappist monk and hermit. Deeply enriched by Bourgeault's knowledge of the teachings of G.I. Gurdjieff and of Christian mysticism, their vibrant, provocative, beautifully written story adds a profound new dimension to our understanding of human love and the possibility of survival beyond the grave. Review for Love is Stronger than Death Amazon.com Reverend Cynthia Bourgeault was a 50-year-old priest when she met her soul mate, a hermit named Brother Raphael Robin (Rafe). They had only three years on earth together before Rafe died suddenly of a heart attack. Accounts of these earthly days together are as intense and emotionally wrenching as any love affair could be. And yet their relationship was always graced with a higher goal--creating spiritual love over romantic possession. After Rafe died, Bourgeault was content to let him rest in peace as she began her journey of grief. But weeping outdoors on a snowy night, she felt certain that Rafe's spirit was beside her. "Although I was still crying, the emotional sting started to lose its force, and a new and tingling presence began to work its way up in me, literally starting from the tips of my toes," she recalls. "I knew in that moment I was sustained by an invisible and intensely joyous partner." From then on, Bourgeault continued her love affair with Rafe. Building on this unusual, interactive love-after-death experience, Reverend Bourgeault has assembled some exquisitely reassuring thoughts and anecdotes on eternal love and the impermanence of death. This memoir could be inspirational for grieving lovers or anyone who wants to further explore the mysteries of love, death, spirit, and reincarnation. --Gail Hudson --This text refers to an out of print or unavailable edition of this title. From Library Journal Bourgeault, an Episcopal priest and professor of theology, met Brother Raphael Robin in 1990 while attending a Colorado training workshop in centering prayer. The elderly monk lived in seclusion in a mountain cabin. The romantic yet platonic relationship that ensued between the 50-year-old Bourgeault and the 70-year-old hermit lasted five years, until his death. Both believed that a relationship can continue beyond this life, and here Bourgeault describes her search for that connection after Robin's death. The unusual love story is told from a girl-meets-boy perspective. Though some readers will be turned off by the emphasis on the after-death relationship, others will enjoy this well-written telling of an unconventional intimacy. Libraries offering titles on mysticism, inner transformation, or dealing with grief will find this a unique and welcome addition.ALeroy Hommerding, Citrus Cty. Lib. 4.0 out of 5 stars Very deep and challenging spiritual concepts April 17 2012

This book stretches you to understand a concept of love and death that is outside the box of our normal thinking of death and of the RC church. That love can continue to grow and influence our living after death and continue to be part of who we are is a difficult concept to understand. That erotic love happened in a monastery with the knowledge and approval of the superiors is even more amazing.

5.0 out of 5 stars Transcendent Love May 24 2009
By M. Greenwell - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Paperback|Amazon Verified Purchase
A love story not based on romance or genital sex? What else could there be? One might think of Dante and Beatrice or Francis and Clare, but Love Is Stronger than Death is the compelling story of a modern day Benedictine monk and an Episcopal woman priest. Their love reaches transcendent fulfillment only after the death of one of the partners. The work of a loving relationship that began with intentional transformation in this life continues on into eternity. For those whose intuition haunts them that there must be "something more," the book offers a compelling remedy for the narcissistic illnesses of the present age.

4.0 out of 5 stars Love is Stronger than Death Oct 22 2008

I bought this book for a friend whose soul mate had recently died. I had read it myself and found it fascinating as well as comforting for anyone who has been deeply connected to a loved one who is no longer physically present in this dimension. It is not a fanciful narrative. It is a heartfelt, pragmatic account of a mystical union that existed before and after one of them died.

This is a wonderful insight into a love affair and the obvious deep attachement to each other is well documented..... the title is very apt.
I enjoyed the book so much I bought a copy for my best friend. We also indentify with the topic as we have both lost our loving husbands and both have even stronger feelings for our Loved Ones now that they have passed on into the care of Our Father.

PS Just wanted to let you know that all the books I have ordered from Amazon have always been carefully wrapped and arrive in perfect order. Thank you. Lorraine
