Product Description

Love Songs showcases pianist/composer David Lanz in perhaps his most affecting setting--performing solo, or with modest accompaniment, as he summons lovely, heart-touching melodies from some deep, internal reservoir of passion and clarity. The disc is a sampler that draws from seven pre-2000 recordings (plus one live track, an attractive performance of "The Eyes of Amelia" with guitarist Eric Tingstad and oboist Nancy Rumbel), and it features several of Lanz's best-known works--from the famed title track of Cristofori's Dream to a pair of selections ("Song for Monet" and "Leaves on the Seine") from his masterful 1984 release, Nightfall. The recording's concept and title were dreamt up by his former label, since Lanz views himself not as a romantic but merely an enlightened pilgrim. Only once, he has stated, has he ever written a song with overt romantic intentions--"Leaves on the Seine", which he composed after a visit to Paris with his wife. The rest, he says, simply reflect his optimistic view of a more compassionate world to come. This helps explain the sentimental overload that sometimes creeps into his works. (The schmaltz police, for example, might write him up for a few excesses on "Beloved".) Yet Lanz's heart is ultimately in the right place, and his simple but earnest music makes a persuasive argument for putting yours there, too. --Terry Wood

5.0 out of 5 stars Some of David Lanz's Most Popular Compositions Jan. 1 2004
Format:Audio CD
A delight to listen to from start to finish, this album of David Lanz's older material features mainly piano solos and other tracks with light accompaniment. This CD has been released by his former label, and contains many of his most popular releases from several different albums when he was with Narada.
If you enjoy melodic, well constructed piano pieces, you will probably enjoy this CD. David Lanz is an excellent composer and pianist and I have no hesitation in recommending this album, particularly if you want an excellent introduction to the musical world of David Lanz and do not have all his CDs already.

4.0 out of 5 stars A great compilation! Jan. 15 2002

David Lanz is one of the greatest New Age pianists of all time. He is able to weave beautiful melodies that take advantage of the entire keyboard, rather than just the upper octaves. Lanz got his start playing in a piano bar, but his music is far better than typical lounge fare. He avoids getting in a stylistic rut, while maintaining a consistent sound. If you liked "Piano 2" (various artists), you would probably like this one. Like any good Best of, the pieces are arranged so the whole album flows very nicely. Great for relaxation or romance!

5.0 out of 5 stars Healing music June 26 2001

When it comes to piano solos, the heart and Lanz's music go together. I was playing "Farewell Amparo" last night, not as well as Lanz, but "Wow! What a feeling!" David Lanz rules :-)
