After getting rid of her vampire stalker and wacko ex-teacher, AJ's undead life should be all candy and roses, right? Wrong.

With a half-vampire, half-warlock baby on the way for her family (that a lot of people just happen to want dead), a hot ex-boyfriend-turned-stepbrother in the house, and having to learn to block people out of her mind so the bad guys don't pull her through to another place, AJ's got her hands full.

The bad guys (the Serpentine) want AJ to find a set of special runes that quite possibly will help them go back in time and make it so that AJ and her family never existed. Can AJ find the runes and decipher their meaning before it's too late? Can she learn to block out the Serpentine completely, before she becomes a victim of their schemes?

LOVE SUCKS! is a fun, mystery-filled adventure that keeps the reader on their toes. The characters are extremely entertaining and well-developed, even the bad guys. The plot moves fairly fast and is well-done. Readers who like paranormal adventure, romance, and semi-realistic fiction will enjoy reading this book.

Teenaged vampire A.J. Ashe is back and guess what? Her life sucks, totally and officially. As if being a genetic vampire with a sunny disposition wasn't bad enough, A.J. is dealing with a host of vexing problems, both old and new. Her Mom is pregnant and apparently the baby is supposed to fulfill some prophecy and pull the teeth of the Serpentines - the biggest, baddest, most evil clan of vampires around. Oh and fun fact? A.J.'s long gone Dad is a full-blooded Serpentine and it looks like he was behind the death of her classmate Noah and the attempt to kidnap her at the beginning of the school year.

On a more personal level, A.J. is still in love with Ryan Fraser, her ex-boyfriend and current step-brother (yeah, not right even in Mississippi). After five months living under the same roof as `family,' Ryan seems to have moved on and A.J. knows she should, too. The problem is, she just can't seem to find the right rebound guy, until sexy Lexy shows up. Lex Archer is a hottie, English and twenty-one and he might be just what the doctor ordered for A.J.'s fractured heart.

Lex and his brother Robbie are super-vampire trainers and A.J.'s godmother has brought them over from London to help A.J, deal with her biggest problem yet. The Serpentines have sent a Bborim, a shape-shifting vampire/demon, to capture A.J. and `bring her into the fold.' Thanks, but no thanks, A.J.'s not about to let herself get folded.

Like Bite Me!, Love Sucks! is a fast and funny read with a solid plot, plenty of action and a dollop or romance. Melissa Francis has a real talent for story-telling and her writing prowess is a solid cut above average. An important point, you really need to read Bite Me! first, but once you do, you'll want to gobble this one up, too.

I am neither a writer nor a reviewer. I am an avid reader who can recognize a fun, fast-paced book. After finishing Love Sucks!, I immediately re-read Bite Me! I had forgotten how much I enjoyed the first story. Although I am not a member of the target audience [Harper Teen], I can remember the drama that was high school. What, you didn't have vampires, warlocks, or shape-shifting demons at your prom??? Also present in realistic detail are bloodlust, a back-stabbing best friend, betrayal and redemption. My favorite new character in Love Sucks! has to be Lex Archer- a cheeky British vampire trainer/player who calls you "kitten"....oh, and the innuendo that surrounds his lessons is as thick and luscious as Aunt D's honey butter. The characters are unforgettable, as is the hilarious, brow-raising dialogue. I will leave you with a couple of my picks for best lines. Ever.

"All clowns should be hit with skillets."

" I unsnapped my ass cape, leaned in, and kissed him."

Melissa Francis has written a great follow-up, Love Sucks, to her first book about AJ Ashe, Bite Me. There is a lot of great action in this book, fun and crisp dialogue that keeps the pace very high, and the characters are fresh and interesting. Do yourself a favor, and pick up a copy of both 'Bite Me' and 'Love Sucks'; they are both fresh/fun takes on teenage vampires. Trust me, I'm a doctor.
