A lot of taboos are broken in Loving Annabelle, even if the film itself remains remarkably tasteful--even demure. The central characters are two women, a teacher and her student, and the setting is an all-girls school (shades of Lost and Delirious). Annabelle (the smoldering Erin Kelly), a senior, is a rebellious rocker chick--the Beverly Hills version that is, i.e. highlighted hair, black eyeliner, and nose ring. Her senatorial mother ships her off to boarding school to shape up. Annabelle's hard-partying ways are starting to become an embarrassment. Miss Simone Bradley (the sympathetic Diane Gaidry) is a popular poetry teacher. She's a Catholic. Annabelle is not. Simone has a boyfriend, Annabelle is gay. Looks can be deceiving, however, and there's more to both than meets the eye. For one, Simone's relationship is not as secure as it appears. For another, Annabelle's ardor is so relentless it threatens to sway sympathy against her. She seems to have no regard for the damage an affair would inflict on her teacher's career. Nonetheless, Simone is not entirely resistant to her charms. Inspired by 1931's Mädchen in Uniform, writer/director Katherine Brooks preserves the forbidden relationship at the heart of the Weimar-era classic, but drops the political subtext. Consequently, she doesn't take on more than she can handle, but Loving Annabelle still feels a little slight. --Kathleen C. Fennessy

Description

One Student, One Teacher, One Secret

Rising heart-throb Erin Kelly stars as Annabelle, a precocious Senator’s daughter who falls in love with her teacher Simone (gorgeous Diane Gaidry) at a stodgy Catholic girls boarding school. Inspired by the classic lesbian drama Maedchen in Uniform, out writer-director Katherine Brooks unveils this passionate tale of forbidden love with intelligence, wit and sensitivity.

Simone Bradley is Saint Theresa’s prized young poetry teacher who finds peace and security within the boarding school walls. Surrounded by a lush atmosphere with little conflict, Simone has settled into a life of comfort and purpose educating her young female students.

Annabelle is a charismatic and enchanting new student who quickly draws attention for her rebellious behavior. Fearing Annabelle will influence the other students, rigid Headmistress (Ilene Graff), instructs Simone to keep an eye on Annabelle and get her under control.

Simone, however, quickly learns that the real challenge is not Annabelle’s behavior but the attraction budding between the two. As Annabelle pursues her teacher, she unleashes the passion that has been locked deep inside Simone, who must decide whether or not to enter an affair that could cost her everything.

Inspired by the 1931 German classic, MAEDCHEN IN UNIFORM, director Katharine Brooks’s LOVING ANNABELLE gives a modern telling of this “forbidden love” story that continues to be controversial to this day.

With stunning cinematography by Cynthia Pusheck, LOVING ANNABELLE offers excellent performances from its female leads, Diane Gaidry and Erin Kelly, as well as a featured performance by Academy Award nominee/Golden Globe recipient Kevin McCarthy.

LOVING ANNABELLE explores the complexity and controversy of love and struggle between two women who have every reason to deny their feelings. Blind to the world around them, the two journey into a love affair destined to change their lives forever.

3.0 out of 5 stars More chemistry than a science lab!, July 13 2007

I have to say that overall I really liked this movie. The characters were great, and portrayed exceptionally well. The chemistry between Simone ( Diane Gaidry) and Annabelle (Erin Kelly) was fantastic! They really made you believe the story they were telling. It has a good story line, and leaves you wanting more; however, the ending could use a little more immagination on the writers part. I was very dissappointed with the way this movie left things. I can definitely relate on many levels to this movie. From the forbidden love, to the denial, and finally the heartache. This movie does have a lot to offer it's viewers.
Whether you're gay, lesbain or heterosexual, everyone at some point has experienced love. That is the universal word that ties us all together. This movie definitely has that. It's worth checking out; and unless you collect lesbian themed movies like myself, perhaps you might just want to rent it, as apposed to spending the extra money. Just my opinion though.

5.0 out of 5 stars Perfect., April 15 2010

This review is from: Loving Annabelle (DVD)
Loving Annabellle is a movie that tells a story in a most genuine and honest way. It's one of those movies that, after the credits roll, you're left thinking about it all night. I couldn't stop thinking about it so much that I sat down and watched it again the next night. It's a relatively short movie, due to scene cuts made by the director Katherine Brooks, but despite this, the story is told perfectly. I actually think that's what makes it so great: there are few sub-plots which keep us engaged in the main plot.
Essentially, this story is about love. And in short, it's one of the best portrayals of a love story I've seen in cinema. It's honest, pure, compassionate, and whole. This is a story about two women, but for myself (as a straight woman), I was deeply touched. Excellent all around. A MUST see for anyone who truly believes in love.

4.0 out of 5 stars Best lesbian movie so far!, July 3 2009
This review is from: Loving Annabelle (DVD)
Loving Annabelle was one of the first lesbian movies to make me connect with the characters, and actually care for them. The story touch a few taboo subjects, but manages to do so with great human feelings and tri-dimensional characters. There was only one thing that bothered me and it how the only straight male character to be part of the story was reduced to being a jerk. However, his role was so small that you could easily overlook it. All of the actresses were strong and even the smaller roles were played beautifully. They didn't feel like they were placed there to give Annabelle surroundings, but more has if they had their own life and story developing at the same time as hers, unseen by the viewer. The ending was honest, beautiful and true to life.

What really brought this movie home for me was the representation of the catholic school. I went to such a school for my high school years and found the tone to be just like in my memories. The visuals, full of light, nature and serenity, contrasted with the quiet pressure to conform. One of the better visuals for an indie movie. The score is absolutely perfect and brought memories of my own days in the odd atmosphere of the school, both beautiful and passively painful; full of good and bad memories, equally.

I highly recommend this movie. If you are looking for a good, high school romance/drama, this is the choice. It is much more realistic and a lot less melodramatic then Lost and Delirious.

Definitely a most see, for everyone, regardless of sexual orientation or gender.
