This recording was made from 14th to 17 th april 1994 at IRCAM, Paris, in stereo an DDD (full digital recording)
In short, absolutely recommended for anyone who wants to approach to Baroque music at the court of Versailles.

Lully's Radiant Spirituality Performed with Complete Conviction by LE CONCERT SPIRITUEL June 7 2014

To a listener like myself who was raised on and listened to German or Italian sacred works, these works by Lully demanded a period of adjustment and it lasted through my first three hearings of the complete series. It was only four years ago that I heard my first Rameau operas in a boxed set of five dvds. How strange French singing and orchestration practices seemed to me! The rhythms and accents seemed all wrong for one expecting sounds like Verdi or Wagner, or Monteverdi and Bach! But the stagings made the experience of those five operas intriguing, eventually enjoyable. It took longer for these Lully Motets. But yesterday I played the second of the three in my car - including a De Profundis - and I was charmed and exhilarated. I have arrived at the stage of appreciation. Today I played the third cd with an 18-minute Benedictus which has blessed the rest of the day! I give all the credit to Herve Niquet and his excellent singers and instrumentalists. The interplay of solo voices and chorus in these Motets is remarkably supple and fluent. The transition between the two forces is instantaneous, smooth as silk and profoundly moving. I cannot properly describe what I am hearing but its sophistication, eloquence and, yes, aristocratic bearing is completely new to me. I am seized by an entirely new kind of spirituality through this music and it has me thoroughly within its spell.

This is great stuff, beautifully performed. Niquet and his wonderful bunch of performers make the music sound even better than it actually is. Yummy sounds.

Le Concert Spirituel by Lully are quite a find for me. I had listened to some of his pieces throughout the years when they would be broadcast on the local classical radio station and loved the music. There's so much great classical music out there that as I was getting my house ready for Christmas I let this collection play and I must admit that it was so uplifting. It also caused me to remember those times I would hear parts of this collection on the radio but owning the entire collection gave it a sense of completion for me, further causing it to make even more sense to my musical soul~!
