Review

Demonstrating her skill as a writer, Kerbel is able to create two unique voices that combine to narrate the novel in a cohesive manner. Canadian readers, especially adolescents in the Greater Toronto Area, will be drawn to this “true” ghost story set in their own backyards. (Canadian Materials Magazine )

Lure is a little gem. Looking for a shorter book to read that still packs a punch? Lure is your book. (The Bodacious Pen )

The more I flipped the pages, the more I fell in love with the style and layers of the book. (Mrs. V's Reviews )

This story will chill a skeleton of even a toughest adolescent! (The Elliot Review )

"Deborah Kerbel’s novel Lure is steeped in the stuff that makes up a good urban legend: a mystery with a twist at the end, an unsolved local murder, and a ghost story where the ghost tells of his own demise." (Canadian Children’s book News )

Product Description

A Victorian garden, a fishing lure, and a ghost named John …

Absolutely nothing is going right for Max Green. His parents have just uprooted their family from Vancouver to the bleak suburbs of Toronto, he has no friends, and everybody at his new high school is ignoring him. To make matters worse, he’s in love with an older girl who’s completely out of his league.

When Max discovers a local library rumoured to be haunted by ghosts, he’s immediately drawn to it. With the help of some cryptic messages, he begins to piece together the identity of the teenage ghost and the mysterious chain of events that have connected its spirit to the building for more than a century. But just who was John, anyway? Why has he chosen to contact Max? And what does an old fishing lure have to do with solving the mystery?

4.0 out of 5 stars Dreaming of Books Review, Feb 20 2011

This review is from: Lure (Paperback)
(May Contain Spoilers)

Whenever I think of ghost stories I always picture them to be very scary, horror novels and something that I don't read a lot of. The hand sticking out of the water on the cover is pretty creepy but the cover looks scarier than the story actually is. In terms of "scariness" LURE was pretty tame which was great for me.

The story alternates between two characters, Max and John. With Max, he's just moved to the suburbs of Toronto from Vancouver. He's in a new place with no friends and feels very alone. He's drawn to the library and through a series of events is contacted by a spirit who needs his help. John is the ghost and with each chapter we learn more about his life, what happened to him, how his spirit came to be attached to the library and finally how Max can help him.

I liked both of the narrators but I was more drawn to John's story. He's telling his life story and eventually he would get to the part about how he died. He kept hinting about his imminent death that I was on one hand curious to know but on the other hand I was hesitant to find out.

The ending with Max and Caroline was surprising. After reading it and looking back there were some signs but I really didn't suspect anything until she revealed it to Max.

Overall, if you're looking for a ghost story (that's not too scary) with a bit of substance you should check this one out.

Even those who have come to expect great writing from Deborah will be impressed with her latest book. I read Lure to screen it before allowing by daughter to read it and really enjoyed the double narative, the way the plot is built up, and the emotions her story-telling provoke. The charaters in the book carry you carefully along a realistic and exciting journey through time to a satisfying ending. Definitely quite difficult to put down :-)

4.0 out of 5 stars Coffeechug Book Review - [...], Jan 19 2011
By A. Maurer "Coffeechug" - Published on Amazon.com
This review is from: Lure (Paperback)
I really enjoyed this read and think students will too. What I liked about this "ghost" story is the fact that it seemed so real. I know that she mentions in the book that there is talk of the place being actually haunted in real life, but I really felt like this could happen. The whole writing style of the novel is what sold the ideas. The author bounces back and forth between John and Max. Max has moved and is just trying to find his niche in his new location when he finds himself introduced to Carolyn and the library. As events unravel in his life, the next chapter takes us back in time to John who lived during the late 1800's. We follow both storylines until everything is bridged together. I LOVED this approach because the events that happen seem so much more plausible as we read what is happening currently and in the past.

John was a great narrator. I really liked him as a character. I like Max too, but John and his storyline is what really grabbed my interest. As I read about John I could not help but get spooked when I went back to reading about Max.

Read this book. Read while in Halloween season. There is nothing too inappropriate or gruesome, but just enough to give you the chills in a few scenes. I even nominated this book as my vote for the Cybil panel.
I hope to have a book giveaway contest soon and would love to hear from others who have read this book. The book is released on October 2nd. Check this book out and don't forget to go to her website and read her other two novels.
