if you wish your high school sweetheart had taken the initiative or you had an affair later in life, you will be able to identify with both male characters...and what a treat....marley shelton is so beautiful....the slow southern dialogue, mississippi heat, murder and deception combine for a most poignant film...and you won't be able to get marley out of your mind.

Is (s)he or isn't (s)he . . . innocentJan. 29 2014

Format: VHS Tape
While this movie is fundamentally about an older man with a sick wife getting involved with a beautiful young woman working as a waitress and having few prospects it is much more than that. At the end, you believe the title is apt but are unsure exactly who was lured and who was innocent. Elsie (Marley Shelton) is the beautiful waitress and she meets Rick Chambers (Dennis Hopper) a married man with a sick wife that is the one with the money. Elsie lives in a small town and she dreams of leaving and being rich so she is easy prey for Chambers attempt at seduction. Elden Tolbert is a young man that is in love with Elsie and is about to go off to Arizona University. It is unlikely that he will ever see the older Elsie again. Chambers' wife Martha has a heart condition and the only way that Chambers can get at her money is for her to die. The story opens with Tolbert now a reporter and he is going back to cover Elsie's trial for the supposed murder of Martha. Elsie is married to a very rich man and Chambers is now in jail for the murder of his wife. The story is mostly a flashback to the time when the affair is taking place between Elsie and Chambers. I found the best aspect of this movie to be the uncertainty. You have two separate and incompatible versions of what Elsie did the night of Martha's death, you do not know if Elsie is a pretty innocent small town girl or a ruthless manipulator of both an older and a younger man. While some people dislike ambiguous endings to movies, I find them refreshing.

Great MovieMarch 13 2012

This is a great movie. I bought it at Hollywood Video when they were closing here in Albuquerque N.m. It was close to closing day, so there weren't many movies to chose from. I think I bought four or five movies that day. Some sucked, one was ok, and this movie was the best. I've never seen it on Lifetime. But it is a kind of movie they are able to play on Lifetime. I love Lifetime movies!!!! This is a must see movie!!!!
