I have several recordings of Weiss' various compositions for the lute. Richard Stone's interpretations are by far the most fluid and genuine I've come across. Weiss was much admired by JS Bach, especially for his lute compositions. Stone does these works justice.Stone's playing is tender yet precise and he has a genuine affinity for the composer's intentions.This disc was given to me by a friend who worked in a record store. It had been returned for a supposed defect and the desk clerk had lost the cover art. My friend gave it a listen and put it aside for me since it could not be returned to the manufacturer. That was nearly 15 years ago. It is still a favorite.

This recording amazed me when I first heard it, and it still does. Stone is one of the few performers who play the baroque lute with the right dynamic balance between the bass and treble. In other words the bass can actually be heard unlike other players(i.e. Hopkinson Smith) where the bass is almost invisible. The A major suite here is Weiss and the baroque lute at their very best. I have played the lute on this recording, and it is not that great of an instrument, but Stone makes it sing.
