A fair guide for the exam, but fall short on details,
By
This review is from: MCTS Self-Paced Training Kit (Exam 70-536): Microsoft .NET Framework - Application Development: Microsoft .Net Framework--Application Development Foundation (Hardcover)
This book covers most of the exam topics, but it covers the breadth rather the depth of the skills. If you don't know any guides other than the "Skills Measured" info on Microsoft Learning site, this book gives you an idea of the whole scope of the exam. A few technical descriptions on certain topics are conflicting MSDN info a bit, but they are minor glitches. It's worth to read the whole book fast and all the exercises and labs assigned, and then spend half of your time concentrating on the mock exam questions that comes with the book. Put your effort on the mock exam and try to understand the technologies behind EACH question, and the reason why one answer is correct and other answers are wrong. Always reference back to the MSDN for details. A few questions give you incorrect/confusing answers. After you finish the book, you should get a score around 60%. Review each questions and answers until you understand them all and redo the exam until you have a final score of 90% should guarantee a pass in the real exam. Remind you, the real exam is harder than the mock exam. Since this book is an upgrade from the old .Net v2 exam, a fair part of the book and the mock exam questions still mention .Net v2 technologies. You can put less efforts on to those parts. On the whole,

Passed the exam,

I passed the exam, I think that is the most important outcome of reading the book. I spent about 3 weeks reading the book and one week more to go over the practice questions. There are a total of 237 questions on the cd, 137 review questions (from the book) and 200 test-like questions. Be prepared though that the actual exam questions are a lot harder, but nonetheless the book provides a good foundations. Also visit [...] for corrections. Even though it is the second edition of the book, still there are a plenty of errors (on the cd as well). I found more errors that have not been reported or corrected yet. I gave 4 starts because of the errors. You do NOT have to buy additional practice questions, that was one of most important things to remember. There is also a 15% exam voucher included, which is really nice, but I did not use it as it could not be combined with the ongoing second shot promotion.

70-536 is the same for VS 2005 or VS2008 track,

Excellent Book that covers .Net Base technologies common to both .net 2 and 3. Exam 70-536 is the same for VS 2005 or VS2008 track. And is language independent. As a reminder .net 3 , 3.5 and 3.5 Sp1 are modules built on top of .net 2 CLR. VS 2005 has C# and VB compilers for .net 2 and will not compile `Language Extensions' based on .Net 3 or higher. But you can code the .net 3 modules without language extensions. Bottom line its common exam for either track.
