When it came to compiling videos to package together for MTV20, a celebration of the music channel's first 20 years, they could have easily settled for the obvious mega-platinum blockbusters or the videos that are as familiar as TV commercials (which, of course, is essentially what music videos are). But for the most part they didn't. Oh, there are some big names here, like Aerosmith ("Livin' on the Edge") and the Red Hot Chili Peppers ("Higher Ground"), and some of the videos will be plenty familiar, like Robert Palmer's "Addicted to Love," with its array of deadpan fashion models. But MTV20: Rock also includes relative oddities like Cake's "Never There," Monster Magnet's "Space Lord," and Goldfinger's "Here in Your Bedroom." And since the disc's 16 videos are collected chronologically (beginning with "Addicted to Love" from 1986 and ending with Godsmack's "Voodoo" from '99), viewers can see how music videos have evolved over the years, as computer animation, digital technology, and other techniques have come together to create a significant art form.
The presentation is slick: Videos are separated by brief interviews, MTV logos, or commercial bumpers; DVD bonus features include the "Fast Facts and Short Stats" option that provides "Pop-Up Video"-style on-screen information, and profiles and discographies for every artist. In the end, of course, one's appreciation of this and the other MTV20 sets (there are also "Pop" and "Jams," which can be purchased separately; the "Bonus Beats" DVD is available only as part of the DVD boxed set) will depend on whether or not you like the music. But MTV at least deserves credit for taking a walk on the slightly wild side. --Sam Graham

Proving Once Again that MTV has no ...,

The only reason this doesn't get just one star is because there are actually some good videos on this DVD. Now for the 2 stars ....To the point: this DVD is censored. The audio is censored in the same places as on TV, as is the video. Why? It's a DVD for cryin' out loud!! It's not susceptible to the regulations of the communist FCC like TRL and all the other ... on TV. Instead of providing the so-called masses with a pure, untarnished DVD with uncut audio and video, they release this ... with the same lame editing as you'd find on eMpTyV. I know they have an MTV20 Jams DVD as well; it's probably just one long beep with completely blurred out video. God, how much ... are the masses gonna let MTV feed them until they get out of this brain-washed state and demand quality??

Good Videos/Poor Sound,

MTV is wise to release this type of material to the masses. This particular disk is an interesting mix of videos that plays well at partys or in a bar. In between the videos are some of the old MTV shorts that the cable channel showed years ago when MTV still mattered (i.e. the man on the moon with the MTV flag, etc). Also there are some brief interviews with the musicians that provide some interesting insight to the bands. For example, you'll hear how Godsmack got their name.The video selection is a good mix, but I could have done without the lame Counting Crows, Goldfinger, Everclear and Blues Traveler. With the archives of video MTV has available, I'm surprised they settled for such watered down material. It is after all called MTV20 Rock! Kudos though for including Cake, Primus, Monster Magnet and Godsmack. The sound however, is not good. The box claims it is in 5.1 but it sounds more like an AM radio station. After listening to a DVD with real sound, like Rammstein's "Live Aus Berlin" or The Eagles' "Hell Freezes Over" you will notice the drastic difference. I'm guessing this is because MTV went the cheap route for a rushed release. If you want a good party disk or something to throw into the player as background, this is the perfect disk. The videos will be crowd pleasers. Just don't expect to put this one in and show off your stereo sound to your friends. I hope as MTV releases more of this type of product, they will improve the sound quality. This is a MUSIC disk so I believe quality sound should be a main concern.

I always have liked how music sounds in Dolby Digital 5.1. My 1st generation DVD player came with a sample disc that contained a few music videos. When I heard that Image Entertainment was teaming up with MTV to produce a jam-packed set of some of the top videos of all time - I was very excited. The only thing that I was really worried about was the quality of some of the videos - but rest assured, they all look pretty good. There are some very big standouts on this disc. Counting Crows fans will love the quality of Round Here - it has never looked better. The video is presented in full frame or letterbox depending on how the video was produced. Like I said, overall they all look pretty darn good. Of course the newer videos really shine on DVD. The audio for the videos has been remixed in 5.1 - or so the box says. It’s actually mixed in 4.1 because no sound comes out of the center speaker. Basically the sound mostly comes out of the front left and right speakers and also out of the surrounds and sub channel. It took a few minutes to make sure my system wasn’t busted because you can tell no sound comes out of the center. But don’t let that stop you from getting these discs. They really do sound very good. A 2.0 track is also provided. Extras include very short interviews before each video, short biographies, and some commercials. There is also a sort of 'Pop Up Video' selection that you can turn on where little tibits of info will appear while watching the videos. Overall, this is a good mix of videos and pretty good quality wise. Highly recommended.
