The game offers your standard modes of play. Exhibition lets you jump into a full race on your own, so you can practice tricks and surmise the competition. Freestyle mode lets you practice and get used to performing trick combos. Career sends you off to create your own custom rider and race against opponents to further your career (and unlock various bikes and extra tracks in the process). Finally there's also a Challenge mode (hidden in the options menu), which gives you a task of unlocking cool video clips of real riders performing the stunts. Of course, you can play Exhibition and Freestyle in split-screen multiplayer, which provides the ultimate and most satisfying challenges.
Career mode lets you revel in the accurate bikes available, from 125cc models all the way up to 250cc monsters. Bikes handle about the same, but Career mode lets you dress your custom biker in licensed clothing and puts your number and name on the rider's back.
While the physics--particularly the gravity modeling--is relaxed, allowing you more time to do the stunts, you still have to worry about power sliding and using the clutch to win races and stay upright. It's a satisfyingly deep nod toward simulation while remaining as fun and accessible as an arcade stunt racer should be.
Naturally for a PS2 title, the graphics are sharp and the textures complicated and colorful. It's almost as good looking as the real thing, except the mud you kick up doesn't have to be washed off. --Andrew S. Bub

One of the best games for Playstation 2!,

Just returning from E3 today, the Video Game expo, I saw every game under the sun, from Tony Hawk 3, and Mafia to all the Game Boy Advanced stuff, as well as the new Rogue Spear and SOF II. But time and time again my friends and I would return to the Playstation booth to play MX 2002. The game was just too much fun, whether going head to head or racing or doing tricks by yourself, it is a must have game for Ps2.The graphics and sound are top notch, everything looks and sounds awesome. And the game play is super: tap the throttle and watch the riders rev up their bikes, kick your foot out for a slide turn and jam on the gas to whip around turns and avoid bailing out over the hay bales, the game is super responsive and controllable, your skill will make a difference. And when you get some big air, you can do a few button combos to pull huge tricks, flips, superman, almost any motocross tricks you can think of, you can do them on MX 2002. I've barely scratched the surface of what you can do with this game, but after spending a half an hour playing it, I'm certain it will be a best seller. Make this your first game for the PS2 and you won't be dissapointed! 8 of 9 people found the following review helpful

Best MX Title out for PS2 (At Least for Now),

Out of the three Motocross games available for the PS2, MX 2002 featuring Ricky Carmichael is by far the best. You've got all the big names (except for McGrath of course) and the graphics are great. Granted the stunts you are able to pull off in freestyle are pretty unrealistic (double & triple backflips, as well as a frenzy of multiple tricks in one jump attempt) but they add to the fun of the game. There are just a few minor things I don't particulary like about the game: 1) You can't race in a career as one of the real-life riders, you have to create your own dude, which is cool don't get me wrong, I'm just pretty picky when it comes to video games. 2) If you create a rider there's no first and last name slots, which means if you've got a long name (like me) you're going to have to use a nickname or something cause there's only like 7 spaces for letters (like I said real minor stuff that nobody else but me probably cares about). All in all this game is a lot of fun and it's a million times better than the other two MX titles out right now in looks and gameplay. Especially that joke of Jeremy's and that's really too bad because I really don't care for Carmichael at all as a rider and McGrath's always been one of my favorites.
