When he was 12, he wrote his first book, This Can't Be Happening!, about the adventures of two friends, Bruno and Boots, who went to a boarding school called Macdonald Hall. He has written six other books about Macdonald Hall, which have recently been reissued. Gordon has also written The New York Times bestseller, 39 Clues: One False Note and plans to write more for the series. He also wrote Swindle, a Silver Birch nominee, and its sequel, Zoobreak.
