Product Description

Embroider leathers, silks, synthetics and chiffons successfully every time!

When you love to machine embroider, you can't wait to add your special touch to clothing, accessories and decorative items. For many fabrics, your tried-and-true methods work fine.

But what about those other fabrics? You know, the ones that pucker and run ... buckle and stretch ... break your thread ... or bury your embroidery in mounds of plush pile?

With the expert advice in Machine Embroidery on Difficult Materials, you can embroider even the most challenging materials with consistently beautiful results.

Deborah Jones has embroidered it all, from slippery synthetic sheers to the thickest velvet. In this authoritative reference, she unlocks the secrets to embroidering on 18 of the most tempting yet challenging materials:

  • Unstable fabrics: Lightweight knits, stretch knits, bulky knits, gauze
  • Densely woven fabrics: Lightweight nylon, coarse nylon, polyester satin and acetate, silk charmeuse
  • Pile and napped fabrics: Velvet, terry, fleece, faux fur
  • Sheers: Natural-fiber and synthetic
  • "Unfabrics": Vinyl, faux suede, leather
This complete reference puts everything you need at your fingertips:
  • Which needles, stabilizers, marking and hooping methods work best for each fabric
  • Clear, empowering explanations, so you'll know why these challenging fabrics behave (and misbehave) the way they do
  • 18 beautiful projects (how many embroidery designs and how many projects)
  • Bonus CD-ROM with more than 20 fabric-specific project designs in 12 file formats

5.0 out of 5 stars Fantastic Book, Jun 30 2009

Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
This review is from: Machine Embroidery on Difficult Materials (Paperback)
I just purchased a machine to embroider and had zero knowledge. The book is well written and has chapters specifically on various kinds of stabilizers and when to use them, needles to use, and various hooping methods. She tells you why various fabrics are a problem and how to troubleshoot; what to try first, etc. She does not endorse any one product but lets you know what is available. Then there are specifics for each difficult material in their own chapters. It is a reference and resource book I will be going back to constantly.

5.0 out of 5 stars Lots of great advice packed into one book, Aug 18 2010
By Lynne in CO - Published on Amazon.com
This review is from: Machine Embroidery on Difficult Materials (Paperback)
Deborah Jones has been doing machine embroidery for many years and has a lot of experience doing embroidery on any number of fabrics. Having attended one of her seminars, I realized that practically everything she teaches at her seminar is packed into this one book. Before reading the book, I thought that successful machine embroidery depends primarily on an appropriate selection of a stabilizer and possibly a topper. But now I know how important good hooping is, how the selection of needle types affects stitch-outs, and how designs may need to be modified for certain problem fabrics. This book is filled with good advice and demands a careful read to get everything you can out of it.
