When things get bad, we tend to look to the past. And the bleaker the future looks, the further back we search for comfort. As the new millennium keeps disappointing us, TV shows set on the 50's and the 60's (once a rarity) keep growing in numbers. Many have tried and failed. MAD MEN tried and closed the deal. And have been doing so for 5 seasons now.

Meet Don Draper (Jon Ham), a Madison Avenue water-walker (and based on real life ad-man, George Lois). He is an enigma wrapped in a mystery. He is brilliant and secretive. He wants to keep walking the tight rope with no safety net. And definitely no contract. He is a chain-smoking, hard liqueur guzzling, womanizing alpha male. He is a loving father of three, married to a picture-perfect ex model. He has it all. And yet he cannot find peace. Because he learned early on that the world is always yawning at your heels, eager to yank everything you love away.

From bursting with joie-de-vivre Roger Sterling (hilarious John Slattery) and ever scheming Pete Cambell (baby-faced Vincent Kartheiser) to the gorgeous women (such as barbie January Jones and refined Jessica Paré as his first and second wife, respectively), the cast is one perfect pick after another. And the writing is brilliant, reproducing the tastes and smells and nuisances of the era around Camelot, while drawing you in to the personal stories of characters polished yet inevitably flawed.

The 50's and the 60's were before my time so it is not nostalgia that makes me love the show. Yes, I find the era mesmerizing and (probably undeservingly) less complicated. If nothing else, though, back then they knew how to dress. Women looked feminine and men looked manly.

... or as the first 4 times I should say. The writing is not as good as in previous seasons. As usual, it is slow, but kind of getting nowhere. The last episodes are a bit better, but the final one is weak.
Being French Canadian, I am kind of upset with Megan's mother character. This actress can speak french but it is obvious that she is not a french speaking person. For a serie so obsessed with details, it is disappointing to see such faux pas.

I enjoyed the fifth season as much as the previous ones. Don Draper has the apartment I wanted him to have the previous year, but it makes sense that he has it now with his marriage to Meghan, contrasting with Betty's gothic monstrosity. The production remains top notch - great scripts, wardrobe, hair, makeup, music. The storyline for Betty was brief but wonderful and I hope to see more of Betty in season 6. Was happy about Joan's storyline. Lane's departure, while sad, brings it back to the original cast and gives Joan more clout and responsibility. We see Don on "love leave" and uninterested in his job and making things intolerable for Peggy until he later regains his fire and interest in his job. His pitch for the Dow Chemical account was masterful. The final scenes of Don walking away and Meghan appearing smaller in the background and then being approached in the bar with that Don Draper enigmatic look in the final shot makes you yearn for the next season.
Regarding the DVD's, I have all of them. Someone on this site mentioned a cheaper packaging for this season so I ordered it from the U.S. site. The case opens up nicely as in previous years with a beautiful photo of the cast. Inside are small inserts - Canadian Club drink recipes and a colour cast photo. The first DVD begins with someone from Canadian Club showing you how to make the two drinks. I can't tell if this is on the Canadian DVD release but if you like the nicer packaging, then I recommend ordering it on the Amazon U.S. site.

Mad Men addict. A must have. I own all 5 seasons now, and what I love the most about the series, other than my love-hate relationship with Don Draper is watching my childhood history throughout the series - meaning, all the societal and social mores and how they were, and how they evolved and changed throughout the 60s. I was born in 59, so to see all the furniture, telephones on the kitchen wall, birth of products that I grew up with is fascinating. Also, to watch the series address moments in history like the death of JFK, Martin Luther King, and Bobbie Kennedy, the Beatles, the Rolling Stones, Volkswagen Beetles, Jaguar, and on and on...iconic events and things that really were a part of shaping our lives as we know them even now. Great series. Great characters. I'll be sad when it's over. But that's okay, I'll have them all on DVD to watch for a further guilty pleasure later on:)

Mad Men is an awesome series and because it is set in the late fifties, early sixties it brings back a lot of memories of simpler times. There are very similar ads for the real products that they mention, that I can remember from my childhood.

Mad Men: The Complete Fifth Season

I have been eagerly awaiting the DVD release of the fifth season of Mad Men, it's one of my favorite dramas. I like most people wasn't not too happy that they made us wait so long for this season, however I am glad it's finally out!

DVD release -- One of the things I have really liked about the Mad Men series, has been their unique and wonderful packaging of the DVD season. I was curious to see what they would come up with for this season.

Well, quite disappointed to say that it looks like a rush job, cheap basic DVD case with the 4 discs inside. Not sure why they went the cheap route, I liked what they did with the previous seasons.
