Maddder Music Feb. 4 2008

I was so happy to hear the Aruba report of Peter deVries. I'm assuming it is the same author who wrote Madder Music many years ago. I read it while on vacation, but since it was a borrowed book I had to return it. I have never regretted such a decision as much as I do this one, because I could not find it for all these years. I remember laughing so hard, it took 1/2 a box of Kleenex and 2 days to read a small paperback. The man is absolutely zany. His chapter about wanting to appear debonair is delicious. He has his
wife practice setting up stories until the punch line, so that he can utter it with great verve. His imagination is on a par with Walter Mitty. Some chapters are not as good as others, but I'm delighted that I will have this in my very own library.

Had High Hopes...But, July 5 2013

I was not impressed with this book. I was hoping for more of a comedy, but discovered quickly the only real humor came when the main character was actually "in character" as Grouch Marx. Unfortunately, this only happened twice. Once in the beginning to get you hooked, and once at the end when you were so annoyed with the entire story, the premise, and the main character, that any redemption you may found in the slight humor, was quickly lost. The book was a bore ;(

Came quick. Was supposed to read this for book club. I couldn't make it more than 40 pages in. Neither could any of the other women in my club. There are 14 of us, if that gives you any idea.
