Since first encountering Lamsley's fiction a year ago, I've been quite impressed with his output. He is the linear descendent of Robert Aickman, who I encountered simultaneously with TL. The stories here both seem to leave things unsaid & certainly leave the reader's mind free to create a nebulous web of tantalizing possibilities for the unfleshed-out portions; this is both draw-back & positive. In a way I'd like to see the summing up that is missing in the second story; on the other its fun to have some room for one's own imaginings.
The first story does tie things up fully & you'll likely see it coming. No matter, the grayish terrors that Lamsley invokes I find quite engaging.
Lamsley has a strong preference for beach & shoreline settings & uses the costal atmosphere perhaps as a metaphor for the line between living & dead, just as the shore boundaries water & land. Both tales here are sent on the land's edge. The two stories here I found hard to stop reading & consumed this slim book quickly. There are 5 or 6 high quality interior illustrations, & with the book being signed, numbered & limited to 526 copies, this does make the substantial price worthwhile.
Quality of Binding & Materials is very high, but I do find amusing a Publisher getting $35 retail & being unable to spell check the DJ sufficiently to spell both titles correctly. On the spine of my book the DJ titles the 2nd story "Cupboard Live," though the front of the jacket gets it right as "Cupboard Love." Obviously they aren't spending too much on proof reading. Just mention this for a laugh; they may correct this error & perhaps the misspelled jackets will acquire a little additional collectability.
