Product Description

Discovering the pleasures of a handmade life was a longtime dream for urban homesteader Jenna Woginrich. At 24 years old, living in an apartment in Knoxville, Tennessee, and working as a computer designer, Woginrich was nurturing her dream of learning to homestead. Now, at 27, she s settled on a rented farm in rural Vermont, where she cares for two working sled dogs, chickens, a flock of sheep, honeybees, a couple of geese, fluffy Angora rabbits, and a backyard garden that provides much of her own food. Part memoir and part how-to manual, Made from Scratch recounts Woginrich s growing independence and the successes and missteps she experiences as she learns to more fully live off the land. By turns upbeat, dramatic, and sometimes sorrowful, her story embodies the experience of the new homesteader one who is committed to reducing dependence on commercially produced goods while still working a day job to pay the rent. Woven into the narrative, readers will find easy-to-follow instructions for making clothing, playing a musical instrument, preserving fruit, brewing the best pot of coffee imaginable, and much more. Now available in paperback, this new edition features additional material on moving from Idaho to Vermont, a topic that will delight fans of her blog.

5.0 out of 5 stars Made From Scratch, Written With Truth, Aug 30 2010

I've never been one for reading a lot of fiction books (despite writing one of my own), however I've gotten into homesteading research and have taken a sudden turn to having my own, well read library. This is definitely not one to miss; and by that I don't mean its the 'must read' that you must remind yourself you must read.

Miss Woginrich puts a light-hearted, down to earth look on doing it yourself, whatever 'it' may be. She is a humourous, informative writer who seems to write from the heart. Honestly, the only thing that could make this book better for me would be to find out the original copy of the book was proposed via typewriter.

From practical chick(en) keeping (and tales of woe), to exploring the near-lost art of beekeeping and turning the much-loved canine into a much-loved, spoiled working canine who happily helps with groceries and beyond, this book covers her misfortune and success in all homesteading things she speaks of and offers clever insight to her sources and inspirations as well as a few ways to skip her mistakes.

I was originally going to order the paperback version (alright I lied, I ordered the hardcover without realizing it), but I'm very thankful for the hardcover version, if not for its excellent binding and durable paper overlay, then for the nostalgic, classic paper appearance.

A definite, uplifting and useful read for any homestead, budding or bloomed.

5.0 out of 5 stars Very inspiring and down-to-earth, Nov 20 2010
This review is from: Made from Scratch: Discovering the Pleasures of a Handmade Life (Paperback)
I really enjoyed reading this book. While I was expecting a bit more of a how-to book, I was pleasantly surprised at how much I love Jenna's writing and her point of view. I really liked following her journey from modern-type college girl to old-time farmer! She has inspired me to continue to follow my dream of owning livestock, crochet, playing my fiddle and I even want to get into bees now! After I finished her book I went straight to her blog so that I could keep reading more. I highly recommend this book to anyone that has even a slight interest in learning about urban farming, country farming, or just getting back to basics.

This review is from: Made from Scratch: Discovering the Pleasures of a Handmade Life (Paperback)
I loved this book, it made me laugh, cry, hope, dream, smile. It made me feel inspired and excited. I loved the way it was set up, with stories about Jenna's first time with things, her trials and errors and the tips she learnt to make it work. What a great book for those that are interested in a Handmade Life!!
