Product Description

From Publishers Weekly

The author of The Secret Diary of Anne Boleyn and The Queen's Bastard returns with a look at the future queen of England before Henry VIII comes into her life. When Anne is nine, her father is sent to France by Henry to conduct state affairs, and brings the family. Beautiful, intelligent and learned, Anne gains the favor of France's kind Queen Claude as well as of the brilliant Marguerite of Savoy, the bright but lecherous Francois I and even Leonardo da Vinci, all before she turns 17. But Anne and her siblings are put upon by her cold and cruel father, Thomas Boleyn, to do whatever he may order to further his interests and those of England. Maxwell's Anne witnesses the devastating effect upon her sister, Mary, and determines to find her own destiny—certainly a rarity in the era. The budding romance between Anne and her paramour Percy is feelingly described, and all the more poignant when one knows the outcome. Maxwell delivers a ripping piece of historical romance. (Nov.)

4.0 out of 5 stars Intriging Novel of Anne Boleyn's Youth, Jan 28 2009

(TOP 1000 REVIEWER)
I wasn't sure I would read this book through when I began it. It's generally accurate in its facts, though I winced at some minor and one major (in my own opinion) departure from the history books. Still, a novelist is allowed to play a bit with the facts in the cause of a good story, and I found this is a good story. Anne Boleyn was an exceptional woman - an amazing woman with a mind and a will of her own - and maybe she grew up in the way Ms. Maxwell describes. She must have been quite someone to hold her own and keep her chastity in King Francois sex driven court.
The novel is certainly worth reading, though it should be rated PG-13, if not R, because it is very candid about sex. No hearts and flowers romance on these pages until Henry Percy enters Anne's life. You can sense what Anne was up against.

3.0 out of 5 stars Not sure where I stand..., Feb 29 2008
This is the first Robin Maxwell novel that I've read, and it's not that bad. For someone dedicating a whole novel to Anne Boleyn's youth, before her long chase with Henry, that already deserves a star alone. But I didn't think that I could really get into the book, despite my obession for this queen's younger years.

I don't think its the author's fault though. I believe that she had the passion for writing the Tudor novel, and she did put many details of the French court in there. I felt rather turned off though, and it was rather disgusting to read about the days at the court, even it rang true. (With Francois I as king, anything can happen) I guess I just didn't like her reading style very much.

However, you might want to try it to learn more about Anne's earlier life, since it does already show a woman emeriging, waiting to take up her destiny as Queen of England.

5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent, very entertaining, Nov 24 2007

(REAL NAME)
I loved this book. It showed Anne Boleyn in a new light, very innocent in the beginning of the story, but the reader can see how she matures and becomes the fascinating woman we all know her to be later on. I just wished Robin Maxwell could have continued with the story. Perhaps she'll write another continuation, so then there could be a trilogy including the Secret Diary of Anne Boleyn.
