Review

"Treat yourself to a splendid new urban fantasy.... I am looking forward to the next book in the series, or anything else Ilona Andrews writes." ---Patricia Briggs, New York Times bestselling author of Iron Kissed
--This text refers to the Audio CD edition.

About the Author

Ilona Andrews is the pseudonym for a husband-and-wife writing team. Ilona is a native-born Russian and Andrew is a former communications sergeant in the U.S. Army. Contrary to popular belief, Andrew was never an intelligence officer with a license to kill, and Ilona was never the mysterious Russian spy who seduced him. They met in college, in English Composition 101, where Ilona got a better grade. (Andrew is still sore about that.) Together, Andrew and Ilona are the co-authors of the New York Times bestselling Kate Daniels urban fantasy series and the romantic urban fantasy novels of The Edge. They currently reside in Portland, Oregon with their two children and numerous pets.

4.0 out of 5 stars A Book with Bite that Won't Let Go Dec 13 2008
Format:Mass Market Paperback
Kate Daniels has found herself in a precarious situation. She is a magical gun for hire in a world where magic is unpredictable. To find the killer of her guardian she must work with an organization she openly distrusts. And, at the heart of her investigation, she discovers someone is trying to start a war between the Pack, the shapeshifter society of the south, and the People, necromancers who control mindless vampires.

Kate must find a way to sort through the mess while keeping herself alive if she wants to find the killer. But once the killer is found, she is willing to risk everything, including her own life, to stop them.

Magic Bites is the first novel in the Kate Daniels series by Ilona Andrews. It brings the reader into a creative new world full of danger and deception. But even more promising, is the dynamic heroine who rebels against clichés, is complex but not overwhelming, and who will risk everything for what is right. Magic Bites is an absorbing read in the captivating arena of urban fantasy.

Did you like Laurell Hamilton's Anita Blake at first, but then grow less enthused with later novels? Then this series fills that void. The heroine has a lot in common with early Anita, although the author has a more realistic assessment of the practical limitations of threatening people's lives as a method of getting what you want. Nicely original take on vampires, too. If you're tired of those pretty-boy sexy vampires, you won't find any of that kind here. Ilona Andrews doesn't just phone in her world-building and they don't let the sex or romance dominate the story or leave the issue entirely out. It's a very promising start.

3.0 out of 5 stars Entertaining enough for me to try another Feb 16 2012

Having seen loads of good press for the Kate Daniel's series I decided to hop on board and see what the fuss was about. I like to wait till there are a few books already out before I jump in (George RR Martin made me gun shy). Magic Bites was a fair story. There were a few inconsistencies which made me flip back a ways in the book to verify I hadn't read it wrong. The plot was pretty predictable but I was intrigued by Kate and Curran so I can forgive that. I am very curious about Kate and exactly what she can do magically and by her odd relationship with Curran. It kind of reminds me of my obsession with Barron's and what kind of being he was. I am willing to try out another couple installments and see where Andrew's takes things. The story is from Kate's POV so we don't get to see what is happening with Curran from his perspective. I would not say Magic Bites was on par with Brigg's, whom I tend to hold up as an ideal, but it was an OK start.
