The D90 Magic Lantern Guide is the book for getting to know your D90, whether you know very little about DSLRs or are fairly competent in their use. The book is comprehensive, providing in depth, step by step explanations of each of the camera's functions. The author also supplements this with useful tips that enhance the performance of the camera in taking the shots that you expect from the D90. All in all, the book provides a complete appreciation of this desirable camera and will serve as a reliable reference for its use.

This is my second Magic Lantern book by Simon Stafford and highly recommend it. This book is comprenhensive and information is easily accessible. Each camera function is explained in detail and is easy to understand. The laminated quick reference card is also a plus for those not yet familiar with their camera and when in the field taking pictures.

Book is very detailed. Expect to re-read sections, and practice with the camera a lot. This book is more of a source; don't expect much in terms of short cuts, or what works in the field.

A friend of mine gave me this book for my b-day (merci Vincent!). It came to me highly recommended as he swears by the Magic Lantern series.

Unfortunately, this was the one I least appreciated of the four books I read about my D90 (yeah, I know, kind of obsessive, don't you think?). First half of the book is OK. Just OK. The second half of the book kills it: it's a repeat of the owner's manual.

I recommend David Busch's "Nikon D90 Guide to Digital SLR Photo" or even "D90 for Dummies" (for those who are really really "green").

Sorry Simon Stafford, your book didn't do it for me.

Max

Nikon D90 Guidebook July 5 2009
By G. Mencotti - Published on Amazon.com
Format: Paperback Verified Purchase
The Magic Lantern series is an old faithful - thorough and understandable. This guide is likely best suited for those new to Nikon DSLR's. It would also be useful to intermediate users. The awesome D90 performs so well out of the box that a guide like this is not necessary, but it is well worth the money.
Strong points include explanations of: focus, metering, flash, custom settings.
If you are relatively new to digital photography, a competing guide - Nikon D90 Digital Field Guide - contains much of the depth in this Magic Lantern Guide plus a good deal of solid advice on general digital photography technique. For those in this situation, if you were to buy one D90 book only, I'd go with the Field Guide.

Best of all the Guides March 12 2009
By Arnold B. Victor - Published on Amazon.com
Format: Paperback
I also have the Dummies book and the Wiley Field Guide, both of which are good, but when I really need to look up something this is the book I turn to, and the answers are always there. Of all of the guides out there, this is the most useful, most detailed, most informative.

Poor index Aug. 14 2009
By R. Murphy - Published on Amazon.com
Format: Paperback Verified Purchase
The book provides some additional insight into the operation of the D90 camera but it suffers from a very poor index. For me, a good index is critical to a technical book. This book leaves out so many topics that I found myself referring to the Nikon manual most of the time because it has a thorough index. Consequently, I would not recommend this book.

A lot more info than the manual and you can geek out! March 11 2009
By WC Pope - Published on Amazon.com
Format: Paperback
Love these books (I also have bought the D60s) not only is it written in a clear straight forward style but it has little tidbits that help find your way around the camera even if you have never owned a Nikon before. It also has cool geeky stuff like photos of the D90 being built at the factory and an in depth explanation of layers in and around the sensor! And there are photos to inspire your creativity scattered through out. This book has also helped me in working with the speedlight and the Multi Power Battery Pack. A book well worth more then the cover price!

Not more than a slightly expanded manual May 16 2009
By Seattle Reader - Published on Amazon.com
Format: Paperback
The book doesn't provide much more explanation than the manual that already comes with the D90. In fact the manual seemed easier to read and didn't assume the knowledge that the Magic Lantern manual assumes.
