About the Author
Edward Eager was a playwright and lyricist who turned his hand to children's books after reading the stories of the great British fantasist E. Nesbit. His seven books remain among the most popular children's fantasies ever written by an American.
N. M. Bodecker, an illustrator and author of children's books, died of cancer of the colon Feb. 1 at his home in Hancock, N.H. He was 66 years old.

For many years Mr. Bodecker's illustrations appeared in Harper's magazine, as well as The Saturday Evening Post, Esquire and Holiday.
He also illustrated books for adults and children's books by other authors, but he was best known for the many children's books that he wrote and illustrated himself. Awards for Poetry.
Niels Mogens Bodecker was born and educated in Copenhagen. He emigrated to the United States after World War II and lived for 20 years in New York City and Westport, Conn., before moving to Hancock in 1972.
He is survived by three sons, Alexander, of Portland, Ore., Torsten, of San Francisco, and Niels, of Hancock.

We are the magic,

First, I recommend that you read the book "Half-Magic" first. That is Mr. Eager's best book, and it sets the tone for every other book he wrote. You get a feel for the type of characters he has in his stories, and the theme of magic having rules, which is absolutely critical in this book.This books' charm is that Mr. Eager is so vague about the children's; wishes being magic or not that you are left wondering. This is not as overt as his other books, and it is this subtlety that energizes me. We all know that magic has rules-read G. K. Chesterton's essay "The Ethics of Elf-Land"-but this book takes that idea to the next level. The magic is not magic at all, but just our godlike powers of doing good and helping other people. This book is a great way to get your children to do right. Start out with "Half Magic,' and teach you children that magic, along with everything else, has rules. Then introduce them to this series of books, which teaches that magic is just us doing the right thing. This will save you many lectures and fights sine the morality is coated in a fairy tale. A great alternative to Harry Potter.

In Magic or Not, Chris, Lydia, James and Laura do good turns for people. Laura and James' family move to a new house that has a wishing well in front of it. Whether this well is magic or not, you'll have to find that out yourself!

Magic or Not is one of the fabulous books written by Edward Egaer. In this fine story Kip, Lydia, Laura, and James find themselves in a tangle with a magic wishing well! I would recommend Magic or Not to children of all ages. Reading this story is an adventure from beginning to end.
