Mind-altering album,
By "imagine1921" (ME, USA) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Magical Mystery Tour (Audio CD)
If anyone has anything bad to say about this album, then their tongue with which they taste music would be missing taste buds. This 11-track album is a mind-altering experience, starting out with the all-around fun Magical Mystery Tour and the beautiful Fool on the Hill, and ending with a flourish, the inspiring All you Need is Love. In between there is the nonsense phycadelia song, I am the Walrus, and many others. If I had to pick the weakest song, iit would have to be from another album from another band, as this one is a masterpiece. If you liked Sgt Pepper, then you'll eat this one up. Of course, there could be no better endorsement than from John Lennon, who said it was the best Beatles album. It truly is a magical mystery.

It's No Sgt Pepper -- and I'm Glad!,
By John Crawford (Terrace, BC Canada) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Magical Mystery Tour (Audio CD)
SGT PEPPER was the Beatles' grand technical breakthrough -- so whatever followed was likely to pale by comparision -- at least at the time. And MAGICAL MYSTERY TOUR wasn't really an album at all -- it was a US collection of singles, added to a double-EP cobbled together by the Beatles to accompany their loopy technicolour TV extravaganzoid released during the Christmas 1967 holiday (laughingly shown in black and white on the BBC!!!). So it's often described as a sort of second-rate filler in the Beatles Collection. Hogwash! This album contains two of the very best Beatles' songs ever -- and both John Lennon classics! "Strawberry Fields Forever" reveals his struggle to find his place in the world -- and the fact producer George Martin was able to edit together two completely different arrangements of the song because John couldn't choose just one gave us an incredible recording full of richness and exotic sound. "I Am The Walrus" has so much going on in it that you can listen to it again and again and hear something you didn't notice before. John's ominous electric piano and tremendous vocal captivate from the beginning -- and the slurpy cellos and swooping cackles from the assembled gargoyles in the back rows ("hohoho hehehe hahaha") are the perfect accompaniment to this most bizarre of Beatles songs, just as the snatches of radio static and "King Lear" in the fadeout are a stroke of genius. I love comparing it with the stripped down version on ANTHOLOGY 2. There are other terrific songs here too. John's "All You Need Is Love" is a bit dated, but it's still a wonderful piece of music. Paul McCartney has a couple of great moments too. "Penny Lane" may be one of his finest creations; a shiny, bouncy look at suburban Liverpool that makes you wish you lived there. And the "Fool On The Hill" is such a beautifully crafted song you can even forgive the childish sounding recorder in the bridge. In fact, it enhances the song by giving it an innocence that fits with the picture of the man with the foolish grin. As for the rest, "Hello Goodbye", George's "Blue Jay Way" and the title track are all enjoyable, though not at the top of the Beatle catalogue. Overall, while this album doesn't rate quite as highly as REVOLVER, ABBEY ROAD or "the White Album", it's still a wonderful CD, and a must for any Beatles' collection.

THERE IS PLENTY OF MAGIC IN THIS CD...,

This review is from: Magical Mystery Tour (Audio CD)
The psychedelic epiphany in which The Beatles indulged brought forth some of their best and most innovative efforts. While only six of the tracks were written for The Beatles' television film, "Magical Mystery Tour", and the other five tracks, comprised of their singles' releases for 1967, were later added for purposes of an album release, it all works. In fact, two of the songs, "Penny Lane" and "Strawberry Fields Forever", originally were written for their "Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band" album but were ultimately dropped, as they did not fit the creative concept upon which they were working at the time. It is almost hard to believe that these two great songs were originally each a side of the same single release. There are, however, a lot of other great songs on this CD. Each and every one of them stands alone on its own merits. While "Penny Lane", a richly evocative, nostagic refrain, is my own personal favorite, there is a variety from which to choose. From the haunting "The Fool On The Hill" to the psychedelic drug infused "Strawberry Fields Forever" to the rocking rythyms of "Baby You're A Rich Man", there is a song for everyone. This a CD no avid music collector should be without. For those who love The Beatles, this CD will serve to remind them as to why they love them.
