That little bit different..., Feb 25 2005

Murder/mystery in a fantasy setting has been done before, but I've seldom seen one that hasn't worked well, perhaps because the two genres promote a solid, contained plot and originality, respectively, and this book is no exception. The setting, the magic, the plot, the characters are all pleasingly a little bit different to what I was expecting, and it's that unexpectedness that really makes this story.
I particularly admired the use of the masks as protection, symbol, and tool all at once, and I hope the author decides to explore this setting further - it would be interesting to see more of these strange islands, and what other magical artifacts they've developed for different purposes.

An enchanting mystery, Jan 15 2005

To begin, Deby is a friend of mine. That is no bad thing, because otherwise I might never have read The Magister's Mask.
A murder-mystery in form, a fantasy in style, this book includes believable and likable characters and a colorful, vivid and consistent settings. It's a place that I enjoyed visiting, and I intend to visit again. (I don't know if Deby intends to write a sequel, but I sure hope so.)
I hope you'll give this book a chance to enchant you as it did me.
