Product Description

From Publishers Weekly

Appel and Torey are owners of the eponymous Manhattan bakery, which turns out the kind of white-cake treats that graced most tables decades ago. Retro deserts include Chocolate Wafer Icebox Cake, made with Nabisco wafers, and Oatmeal, Raisin, Almond Cookies. These recipes are classics, with a few updated touches. Pecan Pie was handed down from a Texas grandmother; Magic Cookie Bars are packed with chocolate chips and coconut and sweetened with three cans of condensed milk. The unfortunately named Dump Cake is a throwback to old women's magazine recipes, consisting of cherry pie filling, canned pineapple, cake mix, pecans and butter. These super-sweet, mostly buttery items hark back to a pre-cholesterol eraAevidenced by Chocolate Chip, Peanut, Banana Loaf, which the authors describe as "healthy." A chapter on cheesecakes offers Chocolate Swirl Cheesecake and White Chocolate-Hazelnut Cheesecake. A section of baking tips includes little new information for even novice cooks (e.g., advice such as measuring accurately and watching cookies carefully to guard against burning). The same can be said of this book as a whole: these recipes are good, if ordinary. (Nov.)

5.0 out of 5 stars Absolutely the sweetest baking book ever...., Jun 16 2005
By vintagegirl "vintage girl" (Waterloo, Ontario Canada) - See all my reviews
Absolutely the sweetest, old-fashioned baking book ever! I am a collector of baking books and this is my very favorite among them. What I love about it is the ease, the recipes only take up one page each and the simple ingredients (butter, sugar, vanilla, flour) well, most bakers will have these on hand. I have made several of the cakes for birthdays in our family and the Traditional Vanilla Birthday Cake was an especially big hit with the kids. (We did the pink icing and sprinkles thing). It tastes like something Grandma made when you were little. I agree with my co-reviewer who said her daughter and her friends could not believe how much better homemade is. If you want a break from your crazy, busy day, step back in time with these old-fashioned recipes - this book takes me back to a simpler, slower time when sitting on Grandma's back porch with your pie, in your barefeet, was a little piece of summer heaven.

4.0 out of 5 stars Sugar is the key!, Feb 28 2005
By A Customer
I was in Magnolia bakery last week, and finally got to taste a cupcake. I was so happy that I had ordered this book before I left! I made the Lemon Vanilla Bundt cake for my Mom's birthday and it was a great hit! Having actully sampled the world famous cupcakes and personally baked a cake be forewarned of one thing: these recipes have enough sugar to make you go diabetic! I would recommend cutting out sugar, if you don't like things overly sweet. I cut out a cup of sugar from the bundt cake it it still tasted great.

5.0 out of 5 stars Lets you bring home the wonderful smells of Magnolia Bakery!, May 13 2004
By indiestar "indiestar" (Houston, TX USA) - See all my reviews
I never miss a trip to Magnolia Bakery in NYC's Greenwich Village whenever I am in town. It smells amazing and the cupcakes and icebox pies are to die for!!! You do have to crowd into this little shop for quite a while to wait your turn but it's worth it!

This book lets you make all of these wonderful, old-fashioned treats at home with simple ingredients and not a lot of effort. I don't even have a sweet tooth but some of the recipes are downright tempting! If you make nothing else, try the recipes for their famous cupcakes (I like the chocolate ones especially) - makes the book worth getting.
