Product Description

In this "coming of age in middle age" love story, forty-something Nola Stevens slices open the afternoon mail and rips apart her secure, but tedious, life in Seattle. Twenty-three years ago, she moved from her father’s house to her husband’s house, never pausing long enough to acquaint herself with the woman she saw in the mirror every day. But now her marriage is over. Her ex-husband has moved on, leaving Nola parked on her friend Malia’s sofa bed until further notice. When Malia is summoned home to Maui for her father’s seventy-fifth birthday, she persuades Nola to come along. Hawaii astounds her—non-stop sunshine, aloha spirit, and a half-naked sculptor who challenges her see it all, do it all, and love it all. “Mai Tai Butterfly” is a three-fold love story: love of a place, love of a man, and the love of 'living aloha' that makes Hawaii the best place on Earth to start over.

5.0 out of 5 stars FUN ROMANCE! June 18 2012

This story grabbed me from the beginning, perhaps because I am a fifty-something woman. The protagonist is living a middle-aged woman's worst nightmare-she discovers her husband is having an affair. Her best friend whisks her away from it all, to the friend's family home in Hawaii. As Nola gets caught up in the trials and tribulations of her friend's family, she finds healing and a whole lot more.

I love stories that tell us about ordinary people (like myself) who find their own unique strengths when they are challenged by life events. JoAnn Bassett does a great job in this book and the reader gets the added bonus of glimpses into the culture of native Hawaiians. I found myself, for days after finishing the book, wondering what the characters were doing. To me this is a sign of a great book, when the characters have become that real for me.

5.0 out of 5 stars A marvelous story! I loved it! April 26 2012

I had a very good time reading Mai Tai Butterfly and enjoyed it thoroughly. I have never been to Maui (or Seattle either, for that matter), but the imagery in this story was so vivid and realistic that I felt like if I were placed there right now, I would only need a direction or two to find my way around. (i especially liked the descriptions of the sunrises and sunsets.) All the characters seemed like real people with clearly defined personalities which were three-dimensional and well fleshed out. Nola (or Noelani) is a very sweet person and Aiden is positively scrumptious. The dialogue was wonderful as well as authentic. (I don't usually like foreign words interspersed in English sentences, but not only was this done very well, there is a glossary at the end of the book.) The story was very well-written with a smooth, flowing style and the editing was well done with only a few minor mistakes.I really liked how the plot unfolded and I absolutely loved the ending. I would highly recommend this book to anyone who wants to read a really good love story with some great twists and turns.

5.0 out of 5 stars Maui Dreaming Oct. 28 2008
By D. Paul - Published on
What a fun read! For those of you who have visited Maui, it brings back pleasant memories, and for those who haven't been there, makes you long to visit. The story line is believable and captivating. A great read for the weekend, rainy days, or for those fortunate enough, a day at the beach.

I really enjoyed reading Mai Tai Butterfly. The characters were well formed and believable, the setting was beautiful (and well described). The story was entertaining. I laughed and I cried. What more could you ask for?
