1.0 out of 5 stars Mean Texan ruins this romance *Spoiler*, May 14 2008

What could have been a great novel quickly became one that I had to force myself to finish. New York socialite Cassandra Templeton does not want to marry the man chosen for her so she advertises in the Dallas paper for a husband. Jake Steele has recently left prison serving a five year sentence for a crime he did not commit. He is currently under investigation for another crime and he and his brother decide marrying a socialite in New York would be the perfect escape.

Jake arrives in New York and immediately expects Cassie to be a wife to him in every way. He is overbearing. Cassie is astounded at his nerve but happier to be with him rather than Harry, the man chosen by her father.

Jake has to adjust to New York living and almost goes out of his way to antagonize those around him with his cowboy self. Cassandra begins to fall in love with him and Jake starts working in her father's bank.

*Spoiler* All is going well until Harry, the nixed fiancé, finds out about Jake's past and tries to frame him for embezzlement. Jake, who has never shared his past, is hurt that Cassie takes Harry's word over hers and promptly returns to his brother's ranch.

*Spoiler* When Cassie discovers she is pregnant she and her cousin hightail it to Texas. Jake is very slow to forgive. Cassie is just as determined to win him back. Jake has a mean streak which I never liked. He and his brother have an absolutely foul mouth, they curse constantly. It became quite annoying.

There is a secondary romance between Jake's brother and Cassie's cousin. It progresses in a sweeter vein than Jake and Cassie's, who after making up are now fighting about whether they should live in Texas or New York. All these two did was butt heads. The story was so much more original with Jake, the fish out of water in New York than Cassie, the socialite in Texas.

5.0 out of 5 stars Mail Order Outlaw, Mar 13 2009

Bought this book at a book swap as an after thought, but once I started reading it I couldn't put it down. I finished it in one day and have since read several others by this same author. This book is about a New York debutante(Cassandra) who did not want to abide by an arranged marriage her father set up for her. She places an ad to marry by proxy and soon after Jake Steele shows up at her mansion home. He is not at all what the snobbish artistocrats in NY are used to either. This book was fast paced, and several times I laughed out loud, due to the wittyness of the banter/situations the couple engaged in. This book also has a wonderful side romance that involves Cassie's cousin Amanda (who loves and constantly reads penny novels) and Morgan who they meet when then go to Texas. If you like light hearted and witty romances...you will love this book.
