Product Description

Taking three-years between albums has made Weezer grow slower and more sober. But on its fifth disc the Los Angeles quartet is no more secure about its place in the world than it was a decade ago in longing tunes like "The World Has Turned And Left Me Here." Singer Rivers Cuomo, still struggling with adolescence at 34, is all apologies. "All I have to do is swing and I'm the hero/ But I'm a zero," he sings on "Perfect Situation," and "I am terrified of all things/ Frightened of the dark," on the lighters-aloft power ballad "Hold Me." The band, meanwhile, keeps things from getting too heavy by punctuating the songs with a familiar rush of bouncy new-wave melodies and fizzing power-pop riffs resulting in the hair-flinging metal of the future D.A.R.E. theme song and album high-point, "We Are All On Drugs." --Aidin Vaziri

4.0 out of 5 stars an unexpected, yet quite satisfying sound May 18 2005
Format:Audio CD
"Make Believe" is definitely a new sound for weezer. The inclusion of keyboards/piano on most of the tracks is an obvious change in the make-up and sound of the band. But not only that, this album has a different attitude from previous ones. Would you ever expect Rivers Cuomo to say, "Everyone's my friend"??? Hasn't he always been our emotionally unstable, withdrawn, troubled, forlorn, unlucky-in-love hero? Yes, he has, but it seems he is in a better place now, and it comes through in the music. "Make Believe" is a happy album. The subject matter is not always necessarily happy, but the tone is. Rivers even seems to be singing more clearly and loudly, as if he is confident and wants to project his art over the radiowaves (or satellite waves, TV waves, whatever) and is done with shyness. Be sure to do a silly little dance to the fun and synthy "This is Such a Pity."

4.0 out of 5 stars A grown-up weezer. May 13 2005
Format:Audio CD
"Make Believe" is not the Blue album nor is it Pinkerton--I do not belive it was the goal of the band to replicate these albums.
Blue& Pinkerton were created when Rivers(fresh out of smalltown USA with dreams of starting a band) wrote these albums through a skeptical view on human nature and a disenchantment of women.
"Make believe" instead blends haunting lyrics and quirky beats that resemble the Dandy Warhols and Depeche Mode. After listening to the entire album there remain some hints of Pinkerton, a good example is in "A perfect situation" and "Haunt you everyday". I'm not sure if these were out of a sense of nostalgia, but what I am sure is that most hardcore Weezer fans will respect Rivers' growth. For those of you who are looking for another Pinkerton, you are looking in the wrong place.

4.0 out of 5 stars Best album since "Blue" Sept. 29 2005
Format:Audio CD
I just bought this album, and I gotta say, if Rivers or anyone else has ever said that this album is the one they've been trying to make, I would believe them!
Ever since the Blue album, I've been looking for a consistently good Weezer album. With all the albums in between I've found it very hard to keep listening, but with this one, it's very hard to not stop.
Singles already include "Beverly Hills" and "We Are All on Drugs", which are pretty good songs. If they go for a third single, which they should, I'd recommend either "This Is Such A Pity", "The Perfect Situation", or the power ballad "My Best Friend."
But hey, this is a Weezer album, not Weezer songs surrounded by a couple of singles like the albums between Blue and this one. GO GET IT!

5.0 out of 5 stars Addictive tunes June 7 2005
Format:Audio CD
Without having heard any of their previous albums, I went ahead and purchased "Make Believe" after finding myself humming to the tunes of "Beverly Hills" after watching the music video on tv. I can't compare this album to their previous ones, but as a standalone album, this CD hits the mark on every front. The lyrics are somewhat simple, but the melody and chorus' of the songs are easily memorable and stick in your heads through out the day. Although i don't believe there are any tracks that should be skipped, I do recommend "This is such a pity", "Peace", "Perfect Situation", "The Other Way".

5.0 out of 5 stars Great CD! June 23 2005
Format:Audio CD
This album rocks! This is a giant step back to classic Weezer with a brand new spin and plenty of depth! I love this album the same way I love Blue and Pink. There are few albums out today without single bad track on them... this is one of them.
