5.0 out of 5 stars A great underrated fantasy on a great DVD! Dec 17 2003
Format:DVD
This is an underrated German made supernatural fantasy fairy tale that tells the story of a little boy named "Joey" ( Joshua Morrell) who's dad recently died and now living with his mother. He still mourns his death, but one night he suddenly gets strange telekinetic powers that make his toys come to life including the ability to communicate with his dead father over a childhood toy telephone. The other kids at school make fun of him because they think he's making up these stories, he also finds a ventriloquist dummy from a old house that belonged to a famous magician, it turns out that it's possessed by a evil being who treatens Joey into a world of a nightmare. Then suddenly his community is attacked by evil forces, he and his friends are the only one to stop the evil.
A highly entertaining and well done fantasy with spectacular special effects and good direction by Roland Emmerich ( the guy who did " Independence Day", " Stargate" and " The Patriot"), the dummy is quite eerie and will guaranteed to give your kids nightmares. This movie does offer humor and some sadness, so bring your tissues cause it may make you cry just like it did to me.
The DVD is well done with trailers, great picture, great sound and widescreen. It includes both the heavily butchered U.S. dubbed version called " Making Contact" and the full length uncut German version called " Joey". I recommend this movie to anyone who loves fantasies and supernatural movies.
Also recommended: The Last Unicorn, The Secret of NIMH, The Neverending Story, The Princess Bride, Akira, Scanners, Carrie, The Ring, The Others, Final Destination, Poltergeist, The Haunting ( original), House on Haunted Hill ( Both original and remake), Evil Dead, Evil Dead II, Army of Darkness, The Dark Crystal, Labyrinth, The Wizard of Oz, The Flight of Dragons, Transformers: The Movie, Escape from Witch Mountain, A Nightmare on Elm Street, Hellraiser, City of the Living Dead, The Beyond, A Christmas Carol ( Any version), It's a Wonderful Life, The Sixth Sense.

2.0 out of 5 stars R.I.P. - O.F.F. Jun 26 2003
Format:DVD
Between E.T., Poltergeist, and yes Star Wars, this movie had nothing original to it! And I'm not just talking about the plot, I'm talking lighting effects, camera angles.......And I also found myself dozing off more than once during this movie.
I recomend watching Poltergeist and E.T. instead.

1.0 out of 5 stars DRIVEL! May 18 2004
By A Customer
Format:DVD
Somewhere between 'Pippi Longstocking' [yes, this one does have animated braids ala Barrymore], 'Sorry, wrong number' [that would have been cool], and the regular tribe "E.T.", 'Poltergeist', 'Close Encounters' and perhaps even the maglined "MAGIC" [what a cacophonous opening night in Hollywood that was way back] - lies this little sleeping gem of a ripoff .... lucking our director moved on to bigger and better things [if we forgive "Godzilla"] ... but this little flaunt?

NAH!

only really GOOD THING is the somewhat obscure German actress playing mutti [mama] - quite a find back then - Dietrich before the implants!
