This part is the right thing and it works just fine. How long it will last is to be seen. The glue holding the pad to the foam rubber needs some improvement.

Makita sanding base and pad?

The Makita 743081-8 sanding base and pad are weak, within a month the pad deteriorate and fall apart, not sure what can be used to stop this, its cost is high to replace.

Product is easy and quite quick to install. It works great and is a much better option than going out and buying a whole new sander. If you have the time to wait for shipping and a Phillips-head screwdriver there is no reason not to go this route.

If the base pad shattered, check to see if Makita is still honoring a 2003 recall for two models.
