In June 1948 Communist insurgent forces commenced a guerrilla war to end British rule in Malaya. During the ensuing 12 years of conflict there were 8750 reported 'contacts' between units of the Security Forces and the Communist enemy. Eventually Malaya was made independent, and the British and their Commonwealth allies emerged victorious. Written and illustrated by infantry veterans of the campaign, this book examines the Malayan Emergency, detailing the forces involved and the harsh jungle conditions in which they fought. The text is complete with firsthand accounts from the contributors themselves and numerous illustrations depicting the forces' uniforms.

About the Author
John Scurr was born in Edinburgh in 1931. He studied at Boroughmiur Secondary School where he obtained a Scottish Higher Education Certificate. He was called for National Service from 1941-51, when he served in Malaya with the Kings Own Yorkshire Light Infantry. In 1964 he settled into local government in London, from which he took early retirement in 1992. John Scurr has written three Osprey titles among a host of other books.

Nice Introductory Volume On The Malaysian Campaign

"The Malayan Campaign: 1948 to 1960" is a typical Osprey book, 40 pages, of which 8 are color plates. I had known of the Malayan Campaign, but had never read any books on it. So I picked this one as an introduction. For me, that has always been the value of the Osprey brand; they don't go too in depth, but they give you a great overview.
The photos are relatively dark: I'm not sure if that is because of Osprey, the age of the photos, or the fact that they were taken in the jungle. You may want to keep a magnifying glass at hand when looking at the pictures.
One really excellent aspect of this book is that both the writer, John Scurr, and the illustrator, Mike Chappell, were combat veterans of the Malayan Campaign. The only way to beat that is to sit down in person and speak with Malayan War vets.
I think that modelers and reenactors will enjoy this book, as it goes deeply into the evolution of uniforms and web gear over the 12 year campaign. British webbing is nowhere near a specialty of mine, but I came away from the book with a decent knowledge of P44 and P58 web gear.
All in all, "The Malayan Campaign, 1948-1960" is one of Osprey's better books, and a great addition for anyone interested in guerrilla warfare or the history of the British Army.

a very detailed paperback of the fight against the Communist terrorists during The Malayan Emergency 1948-60 Giving a account of how the emergeny started,the forces involved both communist and security. The Jungle conditions including a soldiers life(mainly national sevicemen).Dealing with the Crucial Years and the Final Push to rid the country of the communist terrorist. The book contains many photograph of that Campaign. A book that ever veteran would be pleased to own. I shall cheerish and guard my copy which recalls many of my memories of the time I was there from Oct 1948 to Oct 1951 not forgetting the many comarades we left behind.
