4.0 out of 5 stars An Entertaining Film Noir May 11 2011
By Moodywoody TOP 500 REVIEWER
Format:DVD
Malevolent is one of those B-Films that you are not sure what you are going to get. In this case, the film delivers solid film noir entertainment.

The villain is this film is particularly evil and obnoxious, and Lou Diamond Phillips is solid as the weary cop who finds a noose getting tighter around his neck due to a frame up. The story is actually above average for a film noir, as is the character development of the two major protagonists.

5.0 out of 5 stars Ballarini is THE GREATEST July 5 2004
Format:DVD
I watched this movie once on cable, and Happily Surpised to see Eudardo Ballarini playing a VILLIAN, opessed to the gentle role he played in "Looking for an Echo", which is also an EXCELLENT movie! Angela Landers, from Tampa Florida

4.0 out of 5 stars Good formalic Movie! March 28 2003
Format:DVD
I picked "Malevolent" because Kari Wuhrer was in it. She is not only beautiful but a good actress. Lou Diamond Phillips pulled off a great performance as detective Jack Lucas trying to clear his name. The real star of the movie is Edooardo Ballerini who was the scary heavy in this film.
As you watch this movie you soon can figure out what will happen next. Not a bad thing, but at times its just too obvious thus making the scenes not as much impact as they would. Pretty much you seen all this stuff before. But still everything was good. For a "straight to video" movie they really went all out for production of the car chase scenes which looked great.

5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent Jan. 11 2003
By Amanda
Format:DVD
After passing out in a bar's bathroom cop Jack (Lou Diamond Philips) dicovers his gun and bloodied hankerchief are missing, and the pocket torn from his shirt. However the missing items begin to turn up at murder scenes, setting a stop-watch for Jack to figure out why a stranger would want to set him up for murder. Also starring Kari Wuhrer (clothes on, but there is a nice scene in a shower) and Edooardo Ballerini.

2.0 out of 5 stars I was expecting Jack Bauer to pop out any minute July 22 2006
By Michael Bolts - Published on Amazon.com
Format:DVD
Lou Diamond Phillips (La Bamba, The Big Hit) stars in this forgettable thriller about Detective Jack Lucas who is on a case of a killer. The killer Oliver Chadwicke played by the awesome Edoardo Ballerini (Dinner Rush, The Pest) is also obsessed over a stripper named Jessica played by the miscast but still beautiful Kari Wuhrer (Sliders, General Hospital). Oliver also is very smart but has a shaky past. Jack figures out that the killer might be setting him up to make it look like he is the killer. He finds out who he is and his history etc etc. Nothing much here except a very sexy looking Kari Wuhrer. Formulaic plot involving Cop vs. Bad Guy and the Bad Guy is tryin to fram the Cop. Phillips & Ballerini are the only two that hold the film together. Also starring Gwen McGee (Coach Carter, Mercury Rising), Jack McGee (Breakdown, Rescue Me), Iva Hasperger (Exorcism, Vlad) and Carmen Argenziano (Starate SG-1, Identity)

4.0 out of 5 stars Good cop-serial killer movie May 1 2013
By Cheryl Stout - Published on Amazon.com
Format:DVD|Verified Purchase
I bought "Malevolent" because Lou Diamond Phillips stars in it and he didn't disappoint. But Edoardo Ballerini as the villain stole the picture IMO. VERY creepy bad guy.

A couple good twists to the movie, a great car chase scene, exotic dancers and Gwen McGee playing a fine supporting role as cop Phillips' partner fill out the 95 minute good (but not great) movie.

One thing I did miss since I am partially deaf - no subtitles on the movie.
5.0 out of 5 stars THE LOU DOES IT AGAIN BUT SO DOES ED Feb. 19 2013

MALEVOLENT

As anyone can tell you I am a big Lou Diamond Phillips fan and pretty much love everything he is in. now I did say pretty much because some of the films are eh but he is good in all of them. Any way this is one of my favorites since I really like the villain here. Plus the title alone was great when I first saw this way back. One word and straight to the point, you know I am all about it. Plus how could I not own a movie with The Lou in it.

Jake Lucas [The Lou] is a cop and we all know the stress that can come with that job. So one night at a bar he meets a young man named Oliver [the excellent Edoardo Ballerini].Oliver buys Jake a drink but something is off about this guy. Next thing Jake knows he is waking up in the bar bathroom with his gun missing. Oliver is killing people and setting things up to look like Jake is to blame. Add into the mix a stripper who may be able to help Jake out as she may know exactly who this guy is.

I really like the dynamic here between Lou and Ed and the back and forth the two have with each other. In fact one of the last lines in the film is one of my all time favorites from any movie. I am not going to say what it is but if you watch the film I am sure you can guess what it is. The Lou is great as always but I have to say Edoardo Ballerini is excellent as Oliver here. In all honesty it might surpass his performance in “The Pest” as my favorite from him. Of course villain roles are always more interesting than the hero role.

While it may not be the most original film out there it does move at a nice pace and makes for a nice action/thriller type flick. The performances are great from all involved and the final showdown is one of my favorites. It may because of that line I like so much and how it is delivered but I liked it. The only thing this movie is missing is a commentary on the DVD. I would have loved that beyond belief.
