Blast from start to finish!,
Fun:5.0 out of 5 stars
This review is from: Mana Khemia: Alchemists of Al-Revis (Video Game)
If you're a fan of other installments in the Atelier series, this is a game for you. It incorporates elements classic to the Atelier series, such as item synthesis and alchemy, in an entirely new setting, fresh storyline, and memorable characters! The game is fun from start to finish, and even includes voice acting, as others in the series. Mana Khemia even offers a certain degree of replayability, due to the social life aspect of the school setting. All in all, a great game recommended to any Atelier fan!

NIS America has created a charming and fun game for all ages with this game. Funny animations, dialogue (always set to the Japanese language option with english subtitles, for purists), and stories. Plus you get to hit monsters with playing cards, teddy bears, and turn them into vanilla desert! The story has a lead character with amnesia (like we haven't heard that one before), and a school that is a Japanese Hogwarts. But there are a lot of little touches that make this game stand out from more serious titles (like Atlus' Persona series). Characters get bored and start animating if you ignore the game. The school nurse asks the male and female characters if they've come to the infirmary to "be naughty". The cliques in this school are deadly, they will kidnap members of your team to get you to throw a match. Makes for a fun diversion, just make sure you known precisely when to SAVE that game. Probably the most important part of the learning curve. Bought the second Mana Khemia game before I even finished this one. Now that's a testimonial to quality!

My review is sorta a combination of the two above me... The game was definitely fun, great plot, but the load times just killed it for me. Not to mention there were the occasional lags. It's all fine if you're a patient person, but if you're not, you may want to move on to a different game.

The story is great. No real issue there. There is a plot twist, the head-scratching plot holes, sub-story for each character. It's great. The entire game is based around an alchemy college where you'll continue through the story by completing classes, interacting with your fellow members, and reaching game events. This game is based on alchemy/synthesis and being so, you'll likely be spending a good deal of time collecting materials to make weapons, accessories, and armor. The alchemy system is a little weak, however, as each equip-able item has two slots for passive skills and an ability skill. You can equip 1 weapon, 1 armor, and 2 accessories at a time. That means that you can only have 8 passive skills and 4 ability skills attached to a character. Now where the game fails during the process of crafting your equipment is that it does not tell you what skills you have already equipped. So if your current weapon has a passive skill that increases your attack, you have to remember that your weapon has that skill so that you don't waste a passive slot if you are making an accessory or armor for that character. Skills do not stack. The game continually fails at informing the gamer about certain things throughout the game. I don't know what was going on during the production of this game, but there are some serious issues with freezing during battle. Often times simply attacking with characters Nikki and Flay will cause the game to stop mid-point during their attack for a second or two before it resumes. Not game breaking, but really annoying. Later in the game should you choose to continue into the bonus dungeon that is accessed near the end, there has been mention of complete freezing when fighting bosses. The final boss is easy enough that you don't need to enter the bonus dungeon. |
