Book Description

May 2004
"How To Manage Your Child's Life-Threatening Food Allergies: Practical Tips For Everyday Life" provides the step-by-step information you need to create a safe and enjoyable home, school and social life for your food-allergic child. The book includes hundreds of easy-to-read tips and numerous real-life examples, checklists and sample forms.

You’ll learn the nitty-gritty details of how to handle common situations, and be warned of potential dangers you may not have considered. The book answers all of your questions, including: How do you determine which foods are "safe" for your child and which are not? How do you teach others about your child’s allergies? How do you turn your home into a "safe haven"? What do you need to know to create a safe school and day care environment? How do you handle children’s birthday parties, family get-togethers, guests in your home, etc.? How do you safely travel? Or go to a restaurant? What potential hazards are lurking at the playground, the movie theater or your child’s best friend’s living room? What about sports, camp, Scouts and other extracurricular activities?

For those who live outside the U.S. – or are planning to travel outside the U.S. – the book also includes information particular to food allergy management in Australia, Canada, New Zealand, and the United Kingdom. Easily identifiable "International Perspective" tables with country-specific information are found throughout the book.

This book gets down to the critical details of how to keep a child with life threatening food allergies safe. Many people do not understand the serious nature of these allergies and can put children in harms way through inattention to the details. Ms. Coss has written a practical and easy to read guide that should be required reading for every parent, care giver and friend of children with life threatening food allergies.

5.0 out of 5 stars We can do this! July 7 2004

Format:Paperback
This is a helpful book! It was comforting to both my husband and me as we talked about certain chapters to know we are not alone dealing with this. We'd say, "See, we're not the only ones", or "Oh, we hadn't even thought about that yet". It is a very informative and practical resource and we've referenced it more than once to deal with new situations- so plan to keep it on a handy bookshelf! This book helps put things into perspective and helps us focus on the positive things we can do to manage food allergies.

5.0 out of 5 stars A Must for Every Parent of an Allergic Child!! Jun 13 2004
By A Customer
Format:Paperback
I loved this book! Ms. Coss understands, as only a mother who has been there can, the level of detail that must be considered in everyday living to keep our allergic children safe. I found it very useful to have all the information consolidated in one source. This is a book that is easy to use because it is organized by situations so it can be referenced as needed. I read the book cover-to-cover as soon as I got it, and I know I will reference it often in the future as we encounter new situations. I would have loved to have this book when I had to send my son to preschool for the first time. I am glad I have it as we embark on summer camps and social situations where I will not be. My favorite chapters are probably Chapter 10: Travel and Chapter 6: Parenting. We have always loved to travel and it is encouraging to have helpful ideas so we can continue to do so. And I love the reinforcement in the parenting chapter, that I am not alone and other have managed to get through every situation that I will face.
This book is a must-have for anyone who deals with an allergic child. Thank you Ms. Coss!
