1.0 out of 5 stars Terribly out-of-date, mostly irrelevant Jun 9 2011
By Robert Smallwood - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Paperback
Much of what is in this book is old, out-of-date information, and ridiculously fundamental in its coverage of e-records topics, many which are irrelevant. For instance, the author spends three full pages explaining floppy disks, which are "circular pieces of polyester coated with a magnetizable recording layer." The details of this outdated storage medium are hardly relevant today, and it just makes for arcane reading where important points are lost.

Is it really important for readers to know about EBCDIC, an "eight-bit character coding scheme developed by IBM in the 1960s"? (p. 62) Really?

This text does not mention AT ALL many topics relevant to managing electronic records today, such as: managing social media records, records management for cloud computing, SharePoint records management, or information governance. In addition, it only provides a regurgitation of the 2006 Federal Rules of Civil Procedure (FRCP), rather than any insights or advice on preparation for e-discovery.

Parts of the book are 15 years out-of date, and most of the rest of it is filled with such dense, basic and arcane information that it is not helpful for records managers faced with challenges in today's business and technology environment.

What is most disappointing, is that ARMA, a quality organization of records management professionals, has chosen this book as its "official publication" on this very important and fast-moving topic.
