Book Description

Sep 21 2010
The ultimate guide to creating the most popular form of manga--shoujo!

If you’re reading this, you already love shoujo. But now you’ll be able to take the next step and actually write and draw your very own. The teen characters that populate the genre are outrageously cool, including magical girls, demon gals, cat girls, J-rockers, handsome teen boys, Goth boys, and the increasingly popular elegant older young men that shoujo fans adore.

No one can top Christopher Hart in helping you learn some fundamental art techniques that will bring shoujo characters, which are more realistic and less cartoon-like than other styles of manga, to life. His drawings in this book reflect the coolest and latest style Tokyo has to offer, and the easy-to-follow steps are designed for the beginner.

From coloring to character development, Manga for The Beginner Shoujo has your back on every detail as you learn to create the most beloved of all manga. You may start off as an otaku (a manga fan), but you’ll end up a mangaka (a manga artist)!

4.0 out of 5 stars Great book for Manga beginners, but not for DRAWING beginners. July 19 2011
By Cameron E. - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Paperback|Amazon Verified Purchase
This book is a great book for Manga and Shoujo beginners. It gives you some great examples and each image has a little note next to it with something useful. Like maybe a drawing of a girl with very long flowing hair and next to it it will have in small writing, make sure all your hair flows in one direction and comes from the same direction to make it look natural. HOWEVER, this book is going to assume you are already a decent artist. And just want to take up Manga. It's step by step process assumes you already know how to draw Manga hair and just need some examples. So if you are completely new to drawing, Betty Edwards might be a better idea first, then come back. Because this is my favorite book PURELY on how to draw Manga. Also, Christopher Hart is an amazing artist. I love his examples in the book.

5.0 out of 5 stars Wonderful book April 20 2011
By G-Art - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Paperback
Here is a unique book which gives a comprehensive step by step format to drawing Shoujo style manga. The book instructs on the most outrageously cool characters of shoujo. It begins with the basic shoujo characteristics - sperated chapters for boy shoujo and female shoujo. Face, hair style, hair dynamics, expressions, body types, body poses and more. The book then illustrates in detail the different boy shoujo types and female shoujo types and ends with many useful tips on successful drawing, insights on coloring and character development.
I found the text in the book is also particularly helpful to beginner artists, as it explains the lessons in a breezy manner. I highly recommend this book to manga fans as well as serious artist.
