4.0 out of 5 stars Maniac Madness, Oct 13 2001
By Carol - Published on Amazon.com
This review is from: Maniac Magee (Paperback)
I've never heard the story of Maniac Magee, and I decided to begin reading it without reading the summary of the story located on the back. I was pleasantly surprised with its soft humor, and I thoroughly enjoyed its tall tale like description of Magee's abilities. I loved this book. It was heart warming, enteretaining, and showed that a child's innocence can mend the broken bridge between races that ignorance causes.

A 1996 Nene Award, chosen by children of Hawaii. Jeffrey Lionel Magee tries to spread ALOHA or listen with your heart to the whites & blacks. Amanda Beale is the sheroe while Magee is the folk tall tale heroe of the kids who run to him to untie knots in their shoelaces, watch him do 45 touchdowns, pitch fast baseballs, sleep with baby buffalo in the zoo, teach old Earl Grayson how to read "Little Engine that COULD", eat butterscotch krimpets, dance Christmas polka, treasured Grayson's old minor-league mitt, longed for a home sweet home. Jerry is married to Eileen Spinelli, writer of "What makes me giggle? A moose with a wiggle" from "The Giggle & Cry Book." As Emily Dickinson writes "There is no frigate like a book to take us lands away..." Aloha pumehana, Luz Ramil, School Librarian, Lanai High & Elem. School
