Book Description

This handy reference provides users with an understanding of complementary and alternative treatment options for more than 130 common disease states. A practical manual, it describes a variety of possible approaches to small animal disorders. Concentrating on nutrition, herbs, traditional Chinese medicines, and physical therapies, the authors present both tradition- and evidence-based therapies for disorders not always responsive to conventional therapies. Each monograph-style discussion of natural therapies for disorders common to specific body systems presents therapeutic rationales with the goals of treatment, alternative therapies with conventional bases, paradigmatic options, and authors' suggestions from which they've experienced success. Key references are also included at the conclusion of each chapter.

5.0 out of 5 stars Wonderful resource for home care, Jun 15 2009
This review is from: Manual of Natural Veterinary Medicine: Science and Tradition, 1e (Paperback)
This book is an excellent resource for health problems in dogs and cats. The authors are both acupuncturists and between them have degrees in herbal studies, Chinese herbololgy, and naturopathic medicine. The Manual covers different treatment options for over 130 health issues, namely diet, supplements, Western herbs, Chinese herbs, homeopathy, and acupuncture. There''s also an 'Author's' Choice' section for each illness, so that if you're wondering which of sometimes many options to choose, both the vets list their recommendations.

The book is beautifully organized, fitting a tremendous amount of material into a relatively small format. (4 3/4" X 8 1/2"). Ailments are organized into chapters, such as muscular/skeletal disorders; dermatological disorders; infectious diseases; immunologic disorders; endocrinologic disorders, etc. Problems and illnesses are clearly laid out alphabetically, with easy-to-see treatment options. Sidebars give case reports. While some of these assume that you know Chinese medicine theory, even if you don''t, parts of the Treatment, and all of the Outcome and Discussion sections are easily understood.

Casually flipping through, I wondered whether the book would be too technical for me. There are long reference sections, and the majority of the Chinese herbs were unfamiliar. (There's an appendix giving their Western names and explaining their uses.) But as I read more carefully, I was impressed by the mostly non-technical language, the thoroughness of symptom and treatment presentations, the ease of finding problems and remedies, as well as occasional cautions about drug-herb interactions. The authors explain their treatment strategies for each problem in the Therapeutic Rationale section. You understand not only what to do but why you're doing it'.

The appendices include 'suggested oral dosages for herbs; 'suppliers'; and acupuncture points. The real value of this book lies in being able to learn about a problem and its remedies. You'll be able to work knowledgeably with your vet or treat your pet at home. For anyone doing chemo for cancer dogs, you''ll get help here in figuring out a supportive herbal and supplement protocol. A great resource. For holistic vets, too.

5.0 out of 5 stars Help Your Pet at Home, Jun 29 2009
By Tika Williams - Published on Amazon.com
This review is from: Manual of Natural Veterinary Medicine: Science and Tradition, 1e (Paperback)
Written by two holistic vets, the Manual covers different treatment options for an impressive number of illnesses and health issues. You'll find diet, supplements, Western herbs, Chinese herbs, acupuncture, and sometimes essential oils. There's even an "Author's Choice" section for each illness, so that if you're wondering which of various options to choose, both the vets list their recommendations.

The book is beautifully organized, fitting a tremendous amount of material into a small format. Chapters include muscular/skeletal disorders; dermatological disorders; infectious diseases; immunologic disorders; endocrinologic disorders, etc. The illnesses are laid out alphabetically, with easy-to-see treatment options. Sidebars describe case reports with excellent Discussion, Treatment and Outcome sections.

At first I wondered whether the book would be too technical for me. But as I read along, I was really impressed by the non-technical language, the thoroughness of the symptoms and treatments, and the book's excellent organization. Only the Chinese herbs sections are not accessible if you don't know traditional Chinese medicine, and this problem is addressed in an appendix with explanations of the uses and western names of the Chinese herbs.

Other appendices are helpful, too: "suggested oral dosages for herbs"; "suppliers" of herbs for easy ordering, and even a chart with acupuncture points. (If you know acupressure, you can use these points without needles.) For anyone doing chemo for cancer dogs, you'll get help here in figuring out a supportive herbal and supplement protocol. A fantastic book!

4.0 out of 5 stars Good Starter Text, Jan 9 2007
By Free Spirit "carol" - Published on Amazon.com

Alternative Veterinary medicine is a field to which I have not had much exposure. This book covers many topics in a survey manner with just enough detail. I would reccomend it as a starter text.

5.0 out of 5 stars Good job, Aug 16 2005

This review is from: Manual of Natural Veterinary Medicine: Science and Tradition, 1e (Paperback)
This is a wonderful text on complementary medical therapies for pets. A superb introduction to herbal medicine and understanding Traditional Chinese Medicine. I highly recommend it and as a fellow holistic veterinarian and author (8 Weeks to a Healthy Dog, The Allergy Solution for Dogs, and the award-winning The Natural Health Bible for Dogs & Cats,) I found the information quite useful.
