Excellent reference book,
This review is from: Manual of Woody Landscape Plants: Their Identification, Ornamental Characteristics, Culture, Propogation and Uses (Hardcover)
Michael Dirr's book is a very comprehensive, detailed compendium of most commonly (and some less commonly) used trees and shrubs. His knowledge is encyclopaedic. While there is a lot of information, it is not merely a dry list of plant facts, as he inserts personal, and often humourous, anecdotes regarding his experience with the plants. Highly recommended for plant geeks or those in the horticultural trade. He does have a companion illustrated book which would be wonderful to have too, as this book does not contain photographs. Note for those buying from Canada - add one to all his hardiness zones and about a month to flowering times, as he is from (I think) South Carolina, so we need to compensate for our colder climate.

The great bible for all your woody plant inquiries,

This review is from: Manual of Woody Landscape Plants: Their Identification, Ornamental Characteristics, Culture, Propogation and Uses (Paperback)
A must have for plant geeks of any kind including landscapers, designers and horticulturists alike. Not to mention this is probably the most important textbook you need to study plants. Personally, I use it as a reference guide but if you take the time to read it, you'll come across many of Dirr's tongue-in-cheek gems in the commentaries he makes.

for the advanced arborist,

This review is from: Manual of Woody Landscape Plants: Their Identification, Ornamental Characteristics, Culture, Propogation and Uses (Hardcover)
this book has a lot of information id say mainly for the purposeof reference. there are no photos just drawings of leaves. its more of a dry index of trees at best. probably useful for the very active advanced arborist involved in a lot of planting and landscaping. if you want to get familiar with a wide range of trees and improve your identification skills, probably not the book for you. but if you love super dry reading, i mean really dry, youve come to the right place!
