Review

Review by:K. Srinagesh, University of Massachusetts Dartmouth

Over the last several decades, the technology of manufacturing has gone through changes, many drastic. There are so many innovations, additions, and acronyms that people who have been involved with manufacturing for the last 30 or 40 years are left wondering, at the heights of their careers, if they are strangers to the profession. To them, this book will be a welcome relief. At the same time, it serves amateurs as a guide to the ever-widening world of manufacturing. Editor Geng (Hewlett-Packard) has arranged 67 industry experts' contributions into 61 chapters. Compacted into only about 1,100 pages, this book covers all aspects of manufacturing: planning, processes, quality assurance, experiments, economics, marketing, management, etc. Most of the chapters are short, crisp, and loaded with the latest know-how. This reviewer recommends that all entry-level manufacturing engineers and students read at minimum at least a few selected chapters; and seasoned engineers, a lot more than that. This is a worthy addition to any library with even a few patrons interested in manufacturing. Summing Up: Essential. General readers; upper-division undergraduates through professionals. (Choice )

Product Description

Let our teams of experts help you to stay competitive in a global marketplace. It is every company's goal to build the highest quality goods at the lowest price in the shortest time possible. With the Manufacturing Engineering Handbook you'll have access to information on conventional and modern manufacturing processes and operations management that you didn't have before.

For example, if you are a manufacturing engineer responding to a request for proposal (RFP), you will find everything you need for estimating manufacturing cost, labor cost and overall production cost by turning to chapter 2, section 2.5, the manufacturing estimating section. The handbook will even outline the various manufacturing processes for you.

If you are a plant engineer working in an automotive factory and find yourself in the hot working portion of the plant, you should look up section 6 on hot work and forging processing. You will find it very useful for learning the machines and processes to get the job done. Likewise, if you are a Design Engineer and need information regarding hydraulics, generators & transformers, turn to chapter 3, section 3.2.3, and you’ll find generators & transformers.

Covering topics from engineering mathematics to warehouse management systems, Manufacturing Engineering Handbook is the most comprehensive single-source guide to Manufacturing Engineering ever published. (20050101)

In the past decade, so much ink has been spilled (not to mention blood and treasure) on the concepts of e-business and e-manufacturing that it has been extraordinarily difficult to separate hope from hype. Read the first page

5.0 out of 5 stars A Must Buy for Anyone in Manufacturing, July 20 2004
By Thomas H. Brown Jr. - Published on Amazon.com
This review is from: Manufacturing Engineering Handbook (Hardcover)
This new handbook from McGraw-Hill sets the bar high in the wealth of information on manufacturing engineering in the over 60 chapters it contains. Each chapter has been carefully selected for it relevant content in today's global manufacturing environment, and it is clear the author of each chapter is an expert in their field. It is easy to read, and while you want to at first read it from cover to cover, it is organized to allow quick access to just the right information needed. Mr. Geng has done a fantastic job of bringing these experts together to produce a single-source reference. I highly recommend it to anyone, engineers or technicians, desiring to learn and apply the latest manufacturing technology.

5.0 out of 5 stars Superbly done!, Jan 14 2006
By T. Phan "Simul8 in Chicago" - Published on Amazon.com
This review is from: Manufacturing Engineering Handbook (Hardcover)
This hanbdbook was comprehensively written. Contained many fundamental analyses and methodologies that manufacturing engineers may need to know. The author did not assume extensive mathematics or industrial know-hows in preparing this book. I recommend it for all manufacturing engineers as their personal work bible.
