5.0 out of 5 stars Hidden Treasure! April 16 2011
I discovered the book first, quite by chance on a friend's coffee table. No time to read it, but remembered for another time... Then I found it on the 'in-flight' movie list - so watched the film. Why haven't we heard more about this?? Such a beautiful movie - one for all the family - and a true story as well. The dancing was simply spectacular and the characters very special. We had friends for supper the other evening and then we all settled down to see the film. The men were silent for once! Everyone loved it and we are now passing the word around. You might almost say it has the Mary Poppins factor - you come away feeling really good and knowing that you have watched something special.

5.0 out of 5 stars NOT WELL PROMOTED Jan. 19 2011
By Lorna J. Loomis TOP 1000 REVIEWER
It was a shame that this movie was not better promoted when it briefly played at local Canadian theaters. I had seen a preview for it and knew it was going to be awesome, which it was. I found it playing at my local theater purely by accident. I changed my movie ticket for another novie for a ticket for Mao's Last Dancer immediately, and waited another 30 minutes to see this film, which was probably one of the years' best, next to The Social Network. It was an absolute sensory treat.
I highly recommend this film for those who like dance (and romantic)movies.
It is based on a true story of a Chinese peasant boy who, during the time of "the cultural revolution" in China, studies ballet and becomes one of the top dancers in the world, performing with the Houston Ballet.
You can't miss this one! Order and enjoy!

A great portrait of a real life story of a talented dancer who broke himself off from the clutches of despicable repression of Mao's era. It is also a movie that gives you an opportunity to see the strength and the beauty of ballet.
