Product Description

Book Description

This practical book enables new runners to train themselves from scratch up to their first 10km (6-mile) race and then, with this under their belt, to start to tackle half, full and ultramarathons. Clear, full-colour diagrams, detailed text and beautiful photographs explain physiology and running science in an accessible and inspiring way. From an analysis of how muscles work and how injuries occur to how to choose the right running shoe and the right diet, along with practical training schedules and pacing tables for measuring progress, Marathon Runner's Handbook takes an absolute beginner to marathon fitness in six months. Further inspiration is found in chapters on today's high-achieving marathon runners and the world's most famous long-distance races. An inspiring read and a fund of vital knowledge.

About the Author

Bruce Fordyce, one of the greatest ultramarathon athletes of all time, has raced in major marathon and ultramarathon races around the world. He has set numerous records, some of which remain unbeaten to this day. He came first in the South African Comrades Marathon an unprecedented eight consecutive years from 1981 to 1988, and then came first again in 1990. Bruce has written two books on the Comrades Marathon and is a sports columnist for various newspapers and magazines and the Chief Executive Officer of the South African Sports Trust. Marielle Renssen is an editor, writer and runner. She encountered her first 'runner's high' when she claimed bronze in a half marathon three years ago. Fifteen half marathons, a few 15km (9-mile) races and a good handful of medals later, she is all set to compete in her first 42.2km (26.2-mile) race. She writes on travel and lifestyle and is a contributor to Dorling Kindersley's Eyewitness Guide to South Africa.

total waste of time. 75% of book was pictures unrelated to training. A little info on exercise and diet. Mostly just fluff. Training times listed are too short.
