Grade 6-8-- In this slim volume, based largely on Bourke-White's autobiography, Ayer relates the photographer's upbringing, during which time her parents taught her to overcome fear. These exercises prepared her for her wartime experiences, as well as her eventual battle with Parkinson's disease. Fifteen black-and-white photographs by and of the subject illustrate the book, and include the well-known photos of Gandhi, the Louisville flood, and the sharecropper's shack. The content and chronology closely parallel Daffron's Margaret Bourke-White (Chelsea, 1988), although Ayer presents a less-detailed account of her subject's marriage to Erskine Caldwell.
