Based on Sheldon Currie's short story,
The Glace Bay Miner's Museum, and adapted to the big screen by Gerald Wexler and Mort Ransen (who also directed),
Margaret's Museum is the tale of various characters living in a small mining town in Nova Scotia during the 1950s. A spirited young woman (Helena Bonham Carter) falls in love with an ex-miner (Clive Russell) who has vowed never to go back to the mine--a mine that has killed half of the couple's loved ones. Although somewhat dark,
Margaret's Museum boasts fine performances and clever dialogue. The film received six Genie Awards including those for Best Actress (Carter), Supporting Actress (Nelligan) and Supporting Actor (Kenneth Welsh, as Carter's uncle).
