Mailer's book is the best ever written about Marilyn, in part because it compares different versions by other writers, debunking inaccuracies. Mailer quoted extensively (without permission)from other writers specifically for the purpose of lampooning their sometimes hilarious and often obvious mistakes and inaccuracies, which aroused so much animosity that they and their publishers sued him for copyright violations. This book was withdrawn from circulation and was not reprinted. If you don't own a copy, you should buy one immediately. Marilyn and the myth of Marilyn are both central icons for the late 20th century. -- Christian Gehman
