Marin Marais how do we love thee? Let me count the ways...,
By David G. Cercone Jr. "Dandy" - Published on Amazon.com
This review is from: Marin Marias: Suitte d'un Goût Etranger [Hybrid SACD] (Audio CD)
Once again Maestro Savall breathes actual life into one of the unsung greats of early modern music. Marais' explortions of "foreign" themes and tropes is as usual handled deftly and passionately by Savall and his team of artists. I just got this 2 disc set as an early birthday gift and can't stop playing it. It is in turns sad and thoughtful, warm and comforting, playful and clever. The perfect music for a chilly early January. The only flaw is that the hybrid SACD won't copy to Itunes so I can't carry this edifying music on the new Nano! That said, don't hesitate to come in from the cold and join in discovering Marais' blending of French and Italian, Catholic and Jansennist, Royalist and Subversive (all at the same time!) music once again brought to us by the peerless Savall and his team.

Marais revisited by a seasoned master,
By G. Camara - Published on Amazon.com
This review is from: Marin Marias: Suitte d'un Goût Etranger [Hybrid SACD] (Audio CD)
Since his performance as a viola da gamba virtuoso in the film "Tous les Matins du Monde", Jordi Savall has been associated with the French Baroque repertoire for this instrument. Indeed, Savall should be credited from rescuing from oblivion marvellous pieces by composers such as Fourqueray and Sainte-Colombe. But, first and foremost, his interpretation of Marin Marais music has a unique blend of authenticity and expressiveness. What is noteworthy is that his performances have evolved in time. He has now reached what I regard as the ideal blend of passion and sensibility. I had the privilege of attending a performance of some of these pieces by Savall in a recent trip to Vienna. I can attest that the sound quality of this SACD is the closest thing to seeing the maestro perform. This is a CD to heard, treasured and above all, shared with other music lovers. Bravo, maestro Savall!

A great double CD,
By Sid Nuncius - Published on Amazon.com
This review is from: Marin Marias: Suitte d'un Goût Etranger [Hybrid SACD] (Audio CD)
This is an absolute gem of a double CD. The music is for accompanied viola da gamba, published in 1717 by the great master of the instrument of the time, and played by one of its great present-day masters. This great "Suitte" contains over thirty very varied pieces, every one of them hugely enjoyable and full of melody and rich, satisfying harmonic invention.Savall made a very fine recording of a number of these pieces in the late 1970s with Ton Koopman and Hopkinson Smith, and it's a disc which I have treasured for years. This is a much larger affair - far more music and a larger ensemble, which works wonderfully well. The musicians are all truly excellent (including harpsichordist Pierre Hantai and harpist Andrew Lawrence-King, both real stars of this repertoire) and I found the variety of different instruments used in various pieces really spellbinding, ranging from solo viola da gamba to a full chamber ensemble. Percussion is used only very occasionally, but when it is, as in the Allemande la Bizarre, its effect is really fabulous. Savall himself excels, bringing a lovely sound from his viola da gamba and playing with an effortless virtuosity which is feather-light or full of weight as appropriate. It is wonderful music-making. The recorded sound is excellent, the notes full and informative and the presentation is up to Alia Vox's usual beautiful standard. The whole thing is a huge pleasure and I recommend it very warmly. |
