Book Description

Dec 3 2008 0195326946 978-0195326949 Third Edition
Levinton's Marine Biology, Third Edition, is the most up-to-date text for the sophomore/junior/senior level marine biology for biology majors course. The text is characterized by its exceptionally clear and conversational writing style and its comprehensive coverage that presents organismal and ecosystem ecology topics from an evolutionary perspective. A hallmark feature of this text is its principles-driven approach, in which a particular organism and its habitat are discussed within the context of its fundamental biological processes - what they eat, who is the predator/prey, the organism's internal metabolism and its process of reproduction. The Third Edition has been thoroughly revised and is now more engaging, up-to-date, and accessible than ever. Of particular note, the revision features a new full-color illustration program. In addition, all of the chapters are updated and include the most important developments from the field. Finally, students will find new pedagogical aides to help them master and retain the information.

Review

"Levinton's book is easy to follow yet challenging and is at a perfect level for undergraduate biology majors. The additional material that has been added to the new edition is highly relevant to the field of marine biology and includes many up-to-date topics that students will find intriguing."--Jayson Smith, California State University, Fullerton

"I like the author's relaxed style of communication. The book is very readable at the undergraduate level, but it doesn't skimp on detail to explain a point. The author also brings in a number of personal experiences and observations from his research and travel. I think that this further serves to engage the students' interest and make them feel that they too can become marine biologists. Levinton's writing is accessible and engaging."--Erin Burge, Coastal Carolina University

5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent--and I mean it! Feb. 17 2011
By E. R. Henning - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Hardcover
I took my first marine biology course as a long time college senior because my school offered it for the first time. I am a biology major/chemistry minor. I thought the book was an outstanding resource for the course. It's well written. Also, the chapter ends have many awesome suggestions for journal reading & additional resources. Love it!

5.0 out of 5 stars Rented it, great service Dec 28 2013

I had to get this book for my Marine Biology class. The book was easy to understand and written in a language that was easy to follow. It had many examples to make the subject matter clearer.

I used the amazon rental service for this book and am really satisfied at how smoothly it worked. The book shipped very fast. The return process was very easy as well. I printed out a label and dropped the book of at the closest post office. I would definitely rent books from amazon again.
4.0 out of 5 stars Good general intro to marine biology May 29 2014

I had to purchase this book for a class I took recently, and I think it did a fairly good job of summarizing the basics of marine biology. It includes colorful illustrations and examples of contemporary data from published papers (which I think more textbooks should include). Obviously, now for class you'd probably be required to buy the newer edition of the book, but if you're just interested in the subject, this is a good read.

Book looks beautiful, however I'm not particularly happy with the quality of writing and the organization of the book. It's not very effective.
Thanks for the great sustainable seafood bookmarks!
