Product Description

A New Dimension of Kart Racing The newest installment of the fan-favorite Mario Kart franchise brings Mushroom Kingdom racing fun into glorious 3D. For the first time, drivers explore new competitive kart possibilities, such as soaring through the skies or plunging into the depths of the sea. New courses, strategic new abilities and customizable karts bring the racing excitement to new heights. FEATURES: The Mario Kart franchise continues to evolve. New kart abilities add to the wild fun that the games are known for. On big jumps, a kart deploys a wing to let it glide over the track shortcut. When underwater, a propeller pops out to help the kart cruise across the sea floor. Players can show their own style by customizing their vehicles with accessories that give them a competitive advantage. For instance, giant tires help a kart drive off-road, while smaller tires accelerate quickly on paved courses. People can choose to race as one of their favorite Mushroom Kingdom characters or even as their Mii character. New courses take players on wild rides over mountains, on city streets and through a dusty desert. Nintendo fans will recognize new courses on Wuhu Island and in the jungles from Donkey Kong Country

5.0 out of 5 stars Fantastic Dec 19 2011

Fun: 5.0 out of 5 stars
It's a great entry into the series, while not perfect the flaws don't hurt the overall fun to be had with the game.

The 3D works really, really well. Although, I usually end up moving my 3DS around while playing which then puts the 3D at an angle that it hurts my eyes. So end up turning it off to prevent that.

There's a lot of new faces to the kart racing scene, ones that I have personally been waiting to use for many years. Such as Lakitu and Shy Guy. Shy Guy was in the download play version of Mario Kart DS, but he's never been a character on the full roster before. The obvious veterans like Mario, Luigi, Peach, Toad, Yoshi and Bowser all return.

The coins make a triumphant return from Super Mario Kart (SNES) and Mario Kart: Super Circuit (GBA). They're purpose is much different, and much better in my opinion. You can collect up to 10 coins per track (40 per circuit). They're scattered across the track, each new lap 'restocks' the coins so you can pick them up again. In Time Trails, the coins don't restock each lap. They also offer a slight boost in speed when you pick them up, making it worth picking them up even when you have 10. You lose 3 coins each time you're hit by an item (shell, banana, etc) or hazard (fire, crabs, etc).

The coins also unlock parts for you kart. New gliders, tires and bodies. Each with their own stats allowing for customization. Which is a great addition to the Mario Kart series. There's a set amount needed to unlock each new part.

The two new ways of racing are great. Gliding and Underwater. Gliding is pretty neat, it allows you to drop from gliding whenever you want so you can choose to try and keep gliding for as long as possible or drop quickly.

3.0 out of 5 stars Fun, but aggravating March 5 2014
By Dom
Format:Video Game
The game's challenge is not set by your opponent's skill level, but rather by the deadliness of the items and how frequently they are used on the player in quick succession.

It is not uncommon to be leading a race in first place only to be hit with a blue shell, followed by a red shell, and then knocked off the side of the map, ultimately putitng you in last place.

This isn't too much of a problem on easier settings when you are lapping opponents, but it is when the race is fairly close on 150cc settings.

All in all, this is a weak entry to the series that lacks missions or anything else other than grand prix racing and time trials.

Bought this game for my nephew for X-mas and he can get enough of it. Mind you he still sleeps and do his homework but that is his favorite game. I wanted something without any violence and scored it. Would recommend to anyone.
