Dare you to forget it!,
By Anthony "the loving freak" (Quebec, Canada) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Martyrs (DVD)
Words will mean little when reviewing such a film. All I can say is that although this film is ultra-vicious it also provides us with moral and existential questions.I watched it twice and it got better the second time because I saw beyond the surface. It is a masterpiece of "intellectualized" horror. I dare you to simply forget it, whether you love it or hate it.

Not what you might think,
This review is from: Martyrs (DVD)
I think many and most will hate this movie. I also think that the feeling is justified. Oddly enough it deserves both the 5 stars and the hateful comments. Martyrs will take most of it's viewers to a place we probably shouldn't go, filled with images and themes we probably shouldn't see. But, for those who can handle what the movie presents, and not in it's over the top misogynistic brutal violence, but in it's disturbing view on life, death, and pain, there are both rewards and punishments. Performances and script combine for a harrowing experience, but it is the director's willingness to force us into thinking about the unthinkable, that truly sets this film apart from it's French counterparts. To give away any of the plot might destroy the experience, but be warned "you can't unwatch movies".

Hard to watch but ultimately rewarding,

This review is from: Martyrs (DVD)
"Martyrs" is French film about a young woman in her mid-twenties who along with her friend seeks to gain revenge on the family that kidnapped her and tortured her as a child. It's extremely gory and graphic in its depiction of torture. The most obvious comparison would be "Hostel" but I would say Martyrs is even more sadistic and hard to watch then that film. The french seem to really be outdoing themselves lately with the exploitative gore features. If you want another disturbing French film along the same vein, check out "Inside" as well.
